Denver Summit FC and Washington Spirit Draw 0-0 in Front of Record NWSL Crowd of 63,004
Denver Summit FC and the Washington Spirit drew 0-0 at Empower Field at Mile High in front of 63,004 fans, a new NWSL single-match attendance record, in Denver's first home match.

Sixty-three thousand and four people walked into Empower Field at Mile High on Saturday afternoon to see Denver Summit FC play its first home match. Nobody scored. Almost nobody will remember that part.
Denver and the Washington Spirit drew 0-0 in front of 63,004 fans, which both clubs said set a new NWSL single-match attendance record. Per Denver, the previous mark was 40,091, set by Bay FC in August 2025. On the field, the expansion side and last season's NWSL runners-up traded chances for 90-plus minutes and split the points. Denver moved to 1-2-1 with 5 points, and Washington sat at 0-3-1 with 3.
A Feeling-Out Half With Teeth
The first meeting between these clubs started with Washington pushing. In the 12th minute, Hal Hershfelt teed up Kate Wiesner, starting in place of Gabby Carle per the Spirit, for a first-time shot from the center of the box that was blocked. Two minutes later Hershfelt found Trinity Rodman, and the Spirit forward ripped a shot from outside the box that Abby Smith kept out at the bottom left corner.
Then Denver found its footing, mostly through Yazmeen Ryan. The forward got into the six-yard box from the left in the 23rd minute and dragged a shot just wide, then forced Sandy MacIver into a save at the top left corner in the 33rd. Ryan was the most dangerous thing on the field in that stretch, darting in from sharp angles and making the Spirit back line work for every touch.
There was a brief pause in the 37th minute when Melissa Kössler and Tara Rudd both needed attention, but both carried on and the half closed out scoreless after two minutes of added time.
Denver Pushes, Washington Bends
Washington made a change at halftime, sending Rosemonde Kouassi on for Deborah Abiodun. It was Denver, though, that owned the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Megan Reid nearly snuck one in from a difficult angle in the 50th minute, firing just past the top left corner off a set piece. Kössler had a shot blocked in the 52nd. Natasha Flint missed narrowly from outside the box in the 55th and had another effort blocked in the 57th.
The best chance of the whole match arrived in the 61st minute. Carson Pickett whipped in a corner, Kössler met it with a header from very close range, and the ball slid just past the left post. With 63,004 people already on their feet, that miss had real decibel potential. It stayed 0-0.
Washington steadied itself. Rodman's shot from outside the box narrowly missed the top right corner in the 65th minute and had another blocked in the 70th. Hershfelt was booked in the 72nd minute, and both benches started tinkering. Kössler sent another header over in the 81st, and Rodman made way for Gift Monday a minute later.
The Wild Final Stretch
The finish was frantic. Kaleigh Kurtz picked up a yellow for Denver in the 83rd minute. Wiesner drove through traffic and forced Smith into a save in the 85th, and Claudia Martínez had a shot blocked in the 86th. In the first minute of stoppage time, Olivia Thomas set up Ally Brazier, whose shot from the right side of the box was saved by MacIver. Then, in the final seconds, Hershfelt let fly from outside the box and missed narrowly to the left. Two goalkeepers, two clean sheets, one very loud building.
Who Stood Out
MacIver earns the headline on the Washington side. She made two saves and, per the Spirit, recorded her first career regular season clean sheet. It was also the Spirit's first clean sheet of the season, which matters for a team that had conceded in each of its first three matches.
Smith matched her save for save at the other end, stopping Rodman early and Wiesner late. Rodman took three shots and was Washington's most consistent threat until her exit, with Hershfelt pulling strings behind her as the creator on the first two chances of the match.
For Denver, Ryan and Kössler did the heavy lifting. Ryan took two shots and put one on target before Brazier replaced her in the 84th minute. Kössler took three, including two headers that could have handed the record crowd a goal to remember. Janine Sonis captained a back line that, along with Kurtz, limited the Spirit to two shots on target.
The Turning Point
In a 0-0, the turning point is the moment that did not happen, and that was the 61st minute. Kössler's header from point-blank range was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock, and it came during the spell when Denver was clearly on top. Had that gone in, the record crowd gets the full storybook. Instead, Washington survived, regrouped and finished the stronger side in stoppage time.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Washington 10, Denver 9.
- Shots on target: 2 apiece, and both goalkeepers saved both.
- Possession: Washington 53.3 percent, Denver 46.7 percent.
- Passes: Washington completed 392 of 470, Denver 330 of 401.
- Corners: Washington 4, Denver 3.
What It Means
Denver opened its first season with three road matches, losing 2-1 at Bay FC, drawing 1-1 at the Orlando Pride and winning 2-0 at Gotham FC, before finally coming home. A point against the 2025 runners-up keeps the expansion club unbeaten in its last three. Denver hits the road again to face Seattle Reign FC next.
Washington is still looking for its first win. The Spirit lost their opener 1-0 to the Portland Thorns, then drew 2-2 at Racing Louisville FC and 1-1 with the Utah Royals, and the club noted this was its third straight draw. A trip to face Bay FC is next.
Closing Take
Some 0-0 draws are a chore. This one was more like the first night of a stadium tour: the setlist was a little rough in places, nobody nailed the big solo, and the crowd went home thrilled anyway. Denver drew 63,004 people to its first home match, and with that kind of backing, the goals will come. When the first one finally does at Mile High, somebody should check the seismograph.
