For about 35 minutes on Saturday afternoon, Denver Summit FC had the Kansas City Current exactly where it wanted them: behind on the scoreboard, frustrated, and watching a penalty kick get swatted away. Then Haley Hopkins decided she had seen enough.

Hopkins scored three times between the 39th and 57th minutes, the first hat trick of her NWSL career, and the Current erased an early deficit to beat the Summit 4-1 in front of 11,500 fans at CPKC Stadium. Temwa Chawinga added a late fourth, Kansas City completed a regular-season sweep of Denver, and the club says its league-record home unbeaten streak reached 30 matches.

Denver Strikes, Smith Saves

The visitors landed the first punch. In the 13th minute, Lindsey Heaps found space in the center of the box and steered a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead. Per Denver, it was the captain's third goal in her last four matches. Seven minutes later, Lorena had to dive to keep out Natasha Flint's shot from outside the box, and Heaps nearly doubled the lead with a header off the ensuing corner.

Kansas City finally got its big break in the 32nd minute, when Chawinga drew a foul from Ayo Oke in the area. Debinha stepped up three minutes later, and Abby Smith dove to stop it. Denver says it was Smith's first penalty save of the season and Debinha's first failed penalty attempt since 2019. For a moment, it felt like the kind of save that flips a season.

It flipped for about four minutes.

The Hopkins Show, Part One

In the 39th minute, Vanessa DiBernardo looped a ball down the right for Michelle Cooper, who rolled a first-time pass across the box. Hopkins arrived in stride at the six-yard box and poked it past Smith for 1-1. It was Cooper's fifth assist of the regular season, according to the club.

Kansas City spent the rest of the half living on Denver's doorstep, winning five corners in the final minutes of the half. Smith stopped Kayla Sharples' shot from the center of the box in stoppage time, and the teams went to the break level.

The Turning Point: Hopkins Takes the Keeper's Lunch Money

Two minutes into the second half, the game turned for good. Gabrielle Robinson fizzed a long ball behind the Denver back line, Smith came out to deal with it, and Hopkins never stopped chasing. Smith got there first, barely, but Hopkins picked the ball off her foot and finished from the right side of the box into the bottom right corner. Denver had controlled most of the ball all afternoon. On this play, it lost the one touch that mattered most.

Smith kept the deficit at one for a few more minutes, stopping Chawinga in the 52nd and DiBernardo in the 55th. Then came a textbook Current counterattack. Izzy Rodriguez cleared the ball up the left, Chawinga broke free near midfield, and the Current suddenly had a two-on-one. Chawinga carried it into the box and rolled it across, and Hopkins curled a first-time finish into the bottom right corner in the 57th minute. Hat trick.

Chawinga got her own reward in the 76th. Bayley Feist found DiBernardo at the top of the box, DiBernardo flicked a backheel through a crowd, and Chawinga cut back onto her right foot and curled a shot that took a deflection on its way past Smith. The goal stood after a VAR review.

Star Power

Haley Hopkins scored on all three of her shots on target, and every one of them came from a different flavor of chaos: a close-range poke, a goalkeeper mugging, and a counterattack finish. The club says she now has eight goals this season and 13 in her regular-season career. It was also just the second regular-season hat trick in club history, and her second hat trick for Kansas City across all competitions after one in the Teal Rising Cup in April.

Temwa Chawinga led everyone with six shots, assisted the third goal and scored the fourth. Per both clubs, it was her 11th goal of the season, and Kansas City says it was her 46th in the NWSL regular season. She also went the full 90 for the first time since July 17.

Vanessa DiBernardo made history with the backheel. The Current say it was the 32nd assist of her NWSL career, moving her into sole possession of second place on the league's all-time regular-season assist list.

Abby Smith deserves a mention in defeat: six saves, a penalty stop, and a back line in front of her that made 42 clearances.

Head coach Chris Armas pointed to the team's identity. "The culture is strong on this team," Armas said. "The way the team responded was a team that has real belief."

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Kansas City 22, Denver 7.
  • Shots on target: Kansas City 10, Denver 3.
  • Possession: Denver 60.6 percent, Kansas City 39.4.
  • Saves: Smith 6, Lorena 2.
  • Clearances: Denver 42, Kansas City 14.

That possession number tells you everything about how Kansas City plays. Denver completed 414 passes to Kansas City's 234 and still lost by three, because the Current turned turnovers into rocket fuel.

What It Means

Kansas City improved to 12-5-9 with 41 points, and the club says the win vaulted it into sixth place with four regular-season matches left. It was a sharp response to a 2-0 loss at San Diego the previous week, and it finished off a season sweep after the Current's 3-0 win in Denver in July. The 30-match home unbeaten run, per the club, dates back to July 2024.

Denver fell to 9-8-9 with 35 points. Coming in, the Summit were unbeaten in five league matches, a run that included a 6-1 thumping of Chicago and a 3-0 win over Gotham FC. According to the club, Denver sat 10th at the final whistle, four points behind North Carolina and Angel City FC. The good news, if you are a Summit fan: Denver still plays both of those teams, hosting Angel City on Oct. 17 and finishing at North Carolina on Nov. 1. First up is a trip to Chicago on Oct. 4.

Closing Take

Armas said the team asked itself a question in the postgame huddle: "Why not us? Why not the Kansas City Current. Why can't we make noise and make a splash?" Three Hopkins goals either side of halftime is a pretty loud answer. Denver had the ball, the early lead and the penalty save. Kansas City had Hopkins, and on Saturday that was the better hand.
