Denver Summit FC had the sellout, the noise and most of the ball. The Kansas City Current had Croix Bethune slicing passes through the middle and Michelle Cooper on the end of them, which turned out to be the better deal.

Cooper scored twice, both times off Bethune assists, and Temwa Chawinga added a late third as the Current beat Denver 3-0 on Friday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. It was the first meeting between the clubs, according to Kansas City, and both sides' first match back from the month-long break. The 16,833 fans made it a third straight sellout, per Denver. They did not get the ending they wanted.

A Quiet Start, Then a Fast Break

The opening half hour was cagey. Gabrielle Robinson headed an Izzy Rodriguez corner over the bar in the 10th minute, and Denver's best early look came in the 15th, when Janine Sonis slipped Melissa Kössler through on the left and Marisa Jordan saved it. Jordan was making her first NWSL regular-season appearance for Kansas City, per the club, and she looked comfortable from the start.

After a drinks break around the half-hour mark, Kansas City struck on the break. In the 35th minute, per the Current, Haley Hopkins won the ball at midfield, Bethune moved it on to Cooper, and Cooper ran at the Denver defense before finishing right-footed from the middle of the box. Kansas City said it was Cooper's third goal of the regular season, while Bethune, playing her 50th career regular-season match, collected her fourth assist of 2026.

The Penalty That Kept Denver Alive

A minute later, the Current had a chance to put the match away early. Eva Gaetino was penalized and booked for a foul on Chawinga in the box, and Lo'eau LaBonta stepped up in the 38th minute. Her right-footed shot sailed over the bar.

Denver got a lifeline, and Abby Smith did her best to hold the door shut. She saved two Bethune attempts in the 45th minute, one from the middle of the box and one from a tight angle. At the other end, Jordan saved a Sonis shot at the bottom left corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Kössler headed the ball into her path. Chawinga had a shot blocked moments later, and it was 1-0 at the break.

Denver Holds the Ball, Kansas City Holds the Cards

Denver coach Nick Cushing sent on Yuzuki Yamamoto and Delanie Sheehan at halftime, and the Summit spent long stretches of the second half in possession. They finished with 56.1 percent of the ball. But Ally Brazier missed to the left in the 46th, Yazmeen Ryan fired high in the 53rd, and the Current kept generating the better chances.

Smith kept Denver in it. She saved Robinson in the 64th minute and Chawinga in the 67th, and then pushed away a long-range strike from substitute Debinha in the 75th. Kansas City said it was Debinha's first appearance in 70 days, and she looked sharp in her half hour, setting up a Chawinga chance that went wide in the 80th.

Bethune and Cooper, Again

The goal that ended the night came in the 81st minute. According to the Current, Izzy Rodriguez headed a ball forward from midfield, Bethune brought it down and found Cooper, and Cooper cut in through the Denver defense, beat Smith with a clever touch and finished with her left foot from the middle of the box. At 2-0, with nine minutes left, Denver's comeback hopes were gone.

Kansas City said it was Cooper's first career regular-season brace and Bethune's third career regular-season game with multiple assists.

The third goal was a highlight-reel counter. Bethune forced a turnover, Debinha and Bethune combined, and substitute Rocky Rodríguez slipped a pass in behind for Chawinga, who went one-on-one with Smith and finished from the left side of the box into the bottom left corner in the 87th minute. The Current said it was Chawinga's eighth goal of the season and moved her into sole possession of second place in the 2026 Golden Boot race. Rodríguez, per the club, earned her first career assist for Kansas City.

Head coach Chris Armas liked the response from his side.

"We created a lot of chances, and we didn't give up. We got the shutout which we are really proud of," Armas said.

Who Owned the Night

Michelle Cooper scored on both of her shots, putting each one on target. Ruthless.

Croix Bethune had two assists and two shots on target. Every good Kansas City move went through her.

Temwa Chawinga took four shots, put three on target and scored the third. She was also caught offside three times, which is the price of living on the shoulder of the last defender.

Marisa Jordan made three saves and kept a clean sheet in her regular-season debut for the club.

For Denver, Abby Smith made five saves and deserved better.

The Numbers

  • Shots on goal: Kansas City 9 of 13 shots, Denver 3 of 7.
  • Possession: Denver 56.1 percent, Kansas City 43.9.
  • Saves: Smith 5, Jordan 3.
  • Passes: Denver completed 320 of 401; Kansas City completed 237 of 316.
  • Offsides: Kansas City 7, Denver 0.

What It Means

Kansas City moves to eight wins, no draws and five losses with 24 points, a third straight win after home victories over the Portland Thorns and Boston Legacy FC in May. Both clubs' recaps put the Current fifth. Next up is a Friday trip to the Orlando Pride on July 10.

Denver falls to four wins, three draws and five losses with 15 points and sits 10th, according to both clubs. The Summit had won three of their previous four league matches, which is why Armas was wary going in.

"We knew that Denver is a team that has been pretty hot lately and was going to have big support on the night," Armas said.

Denver hosts the Houston Dash on Sunday, July 12.

Closing Take

Possession is a vibe. Chances are currency. Denver had the former, and Kansas City spent the latter like a speedrunner who already knows every shortcut on the map. As long as Bethune keeps finding the gaps and Cooper keeps finishing them, the Current will be a nightmare for anyone who lets them run.
