Croix Bethune Scores and Assists as Kansas City Current Hold Off North Carolina Courage 2-1
Croix Bethune scored and set up Michelle Cooper inside 23 minutes, and the Kansas City Current held on for a 2-1 win at the North Carolina Courage, their first road win of 2026.

Eight minutes. That is how long it took the Kansas City Current to remind everyone in Cary that a road trip does not have to feel like a sentence. Croix Bethune volleyed in the opener, then threaded the pass for the second, and by the 23rd minute the visitors had the kind of cushion that lets a coach finally exhale.
He needed every inch of it. Kansas City beat the North Carolina Courage 2-1 on Saturday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park, surviving a Manaka Matsukubo goal in the 85th minute and a frantic stoppage-time finish that ended with Courage substitute Feli Rauch sent off for violent conduct. The Current say it was their first road win of the 2026 season and their first road win over the Courage since 2022. The crowd of 10,031, the third largest in Courage history per the club, came for a party and got a heist.
Bethune Lights the Fuse
Kansas City came out like it had a flight to catch. Bethune and Ally Sentnor had already tested the range before the breakthrough. Per the Current, Laney Rouse whipped in a cross from the right, it clipped a Courage defender's leg and dropped to Bethune near the penalty spot. She popped it up to herself and hit a right-footed volley that, by the club's account, went off Kailen Sheridan's fingertips on its way into the top right corner.
In between, Matsukubo fired three efforts off target between the 18th and 20th minutes. Then Kansas City struck again on the break. Lo'eau LaBonta picked off a pass at midfield and nodded it forward, according to the club, and Michelle Cooper laid it back to Bethune before taking off down the right. Bethune's pass sliced through the Courage back line, Cooper rounded the onrushing Sheridan, and she finished from a difficult angle on the right. Two goals on two shots on target.
The Current could have buried the match before halftime. In the first minute of stoppage time, Temwa Chawinga had a shot blocked, Sentnor dragged a fast-break chance wide and Chawinga lifted a close-range effort just over the bar. Three looks inside one minute, zero goals, and a door left wide open.
The Courage Bring the Noise
North Carolina walked through that door after the break. A 55th-minute double change brought on Evelyn Ijeh and Lauryn Thompson, and the game tilted hard toward Lorena's goal. What followed was a siege.
Elizabeth Ball threw herself in front of a Matsukubo shot in the 75th minute, per the Current. Lorena stopped a Riley Jackson strike from distance a minute later, then dove to keep out an Ijeh header in the 77th. Ijeh missed from close range in the 81st. Kansas City's only attempt of the second half in ESPN's feed was a blocked Sentnor shot in the 60th minute, which tells you exactly who was holding the microphone.
The pressure finally cracked something in the 85th minute. Ryan Williams slid a low ball across for Ijeh, Lorena blocked her first effort with a kick save, and Matsukubo pounced on the scramble to steer a left-footed finish into the bottom left corner. Ashley Sanchez then headed a set piece narrowly wide in the 90th, and Cary was suddenly very, very loud.
The comeback lost its legs in stoppage time. After a VAR review upgraded the card, Rauch, who had come on in the 81st minute, was shown red for violent conduct.
Bethune, Cooper and the Wall Behind Them
Croix Bethune was the best player on the field for as long as she was on it. She scored, assisted, and put one of her two shots on target before Kyra Carusa replaced her in the 79th minute. The goal was her second of the season, and the Current say it was only the second time in her NWSL regular season career that she recorded a goal and an assist in the same match, the first coming in 2024.
Michelle Cooper made the run, kept her nerve and finished the move. It was her second goal of 2026 and her 14th for Kansas City, which the club says moves her into fourth place all-time in club history.
Lorena made three saves, and two of them, on Ijeh in the 77th and 85th minutes, were the difference between a win and a dropped two points. Lo'eau LaBonta started the second goal on a day the club says she made her 100th regular season start for Kansas City, the first player in club history to reach that mark.
For North Carolina, Manaka Matsukubo took six shots and finally got one through, her third goal of the season by the club's count. Evelyn Ijeh added four shots, two on target, off the bench.
The Turning Point
Call it the 23rd minute. North Carolina won the second half going away and still lost, because Bethune's pass and Cooper's finish turned one sloppy Courage possession into a two-goal lead. That counter is the only reason Matsukubo's late goal was a consolation instead of an equalizer.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: North Carolina 17, Kansas City 10. On target: Courage 4, Current 2.
- Clinical finishing: Both Kansas City shots on target went in, and Sheridan finished with zero saves.
- Possession: North Carolina 57.6 percent, Kansas City 42.4.
- Defending the box: Kansas City made 42 clearances to North Carolina's 16 and won the interception count 14 to 5.
- Crosses: The Courage attempted 31 and completed only 5.
Where It Leaves Them
Kansas City moves to three wins, no draws and four losses with 9 points, and the Current's own recap listed them 10th. It is a needed jolt for a team that had lost all four previous road matches this season, at Chicago, Seattle, Portland and Washington, including a 4-0 beating in Washington eight days earlier. The Current return home to face Chicago Stars FC on Sunday, May 10.
North Carolina falls to two wins, three draws and two losses, also on 9 points, and the club says the defeat snapped a three-match unbeaten run. The Courage head back on the road to face the Orlando Pride on Friday, May 8.
The Final Word
Kansas City head coach Chris Armas sounded like a man who enjoyed the first act and survived the third. "The way we stepped on the pitch, we arrived all business, and I think we could see that," he said. "You don't often win the game in the first half, but the two-goal lead gave us a cushion." Kansas City pulled off the heist in the first 23 minutes and spent the whole second half sweating through the getaway.
