Tomás Chancalay plays like a guy who already knows where everybody is going to be before they do. On Saturday night at Allianz Field, he scored one, created another and gave Minnesota United's attack the kind of edge that turns a decent month into a statement.

Minnesota United beat the Portland Timbers 2-0, with Chancalay finding the top left corner in the 16th minute and then teeing up Kelvin Yeboah for a 60th-minute finish from point-blank range. It was Minnesota's third straight league win, and the Loons still have not conceded a goal at home this season, according to the club.

Chancalay Opens His Account

The opening stretch was frantic, with both teams earning corners inside the first two minutes. Yeboah dragged a left-footed effort just wide in the 9th minute, and David Da Costa sent a direct free kick just over the bar in the 14th.

Then Minnesota struck. Jefferson Díaz collected the ball near the right end line and, as both clubs described it, cut it back to the top of the box. Chancalay took one touch and placed a right-footed shot into the top left corner. Minnesota said it was his first goal as a Loon, and the calm of the finish suggested he will not be waiting long for the second.

Chancalay picked up a yellow card ten minutes later, but by then he had already done the important work of his half.

Portland Rattles the Woodwork

The Timbers had their moments. Felipe Mora headed wide from a Jimer Fory cross in the 29th minute, and Cole Bassett sent a shot high and wide in the 32nd. The best chances came in a wild 44th minute: Kristoffer Velde missed from the center of the box, Bassett hit the left post from the center of the box, and Antony had a shot blocked. Three attempts, zero goals, one very relieved Minnesota back line.

At the other end, James Pantemis kept Portland within one by getting down to save a Joaquín Pereyra shot from distance in the 41st minute. Minnesota went to the break up 1-0, and the Timbers had to be wondering how they were not level.

A Counter Built for a Highlight Reel

Portland sent on Kevin Kelsy for Mora in the 55th minute, chasing an equalizer. Five minutes later, Minnesota put the game away on the break, and it was a beauty.

Minnesota said the move began with a Portland turnover. Pereyra, with space on the right, switched play with a long diagonal to Chancalay at the back post, and Chancalay slid the ball across the six-yard box for Yeboah to finish from very close range into the center of the goal. The Portland back line could only watch the ball travel.

That sequence sums up what makes this Minnesota front three dangerous. Pereyra sees the field, Chancalay connects the dots and Yeboah arrives at the right time. Minnesota's own recap gushed about the trio, and it is hard to argue with the evidence.

Seeing It Out

Minnesota did not so much sit on the lead as manage it. Devin Padelford replaced Nicolás Romero in the 66th minute, Wil Trapp and Mauricio González came on in the 74th, and James Rodríguez got a late cameo alongside Mamadou Dieng in the 90th. Portland threw on Alexander Aravena and Ariel Lassiter, but Velde missed twice more, in the 79th and 89th minutes, and the Timbers finished the night with just two shots on target. At the other end, González and Triantis both forced late saves from Pantemis, and the margin could easily have been wider.

The Front Three and the Keepers

Chancalay finished with a goal, an assist and two shots before he was replaced by Mauricio González in the 74th minute. Yeboah scored on two attempts. Pereyra was the busiest attacker on the field with five shots, and his cross-field pass created the clincher. Díaz, a center back, delivered the assist on the opener.

Drake Callender kept the clean sheet with two saves, both in the closing minutes, stopping Da Costa in the 85th minute and Alexander Aravena in the 88th. Nectarios Triantis was a two-way presence in midfield, putting a shot on target and picking up a yellow card in the 73rd minute.

For Portland, Pantemis was excellent, making five saves, including two in stoppage time to deny González and Anthony Markanich. José Caicedo led the Timbers with 84 completed passes, per the club, and Brandon Bye made his 200th MLS appearance, also per Portland. The club added that Finn Surman remains the only Timbers field player to play every minute this season, 720 in all.

Less Ball, More Bite

  • Shots on target: Minnesota 7, Portland 2.
  • Total shots: Minnesota 17, Portland 13.
  • Possession: Portland 56.3 percent, Minnesota 43.7 percent.
  • Crosses: Portland attempted 23 and completed one.
  • Saves: Pantemis 5, Callender 2.

Three Straight for the Loons

Minnesota moves to 4-2-2 with 14 points, and the club said that puts the Loons sixth in the Western Conference. They are unbeaten in four league games, and Minnesota said it has outscored opponents 3-0 across its three home matches this season. Head coach Cameron Knowles kept the same lineup that won in San Diego, per the club, and the continuity showed. Minnesota heads to FC Dallas on Wednesday.

Portland falls to 2-1-5 with 7 points, one week after a 2-1 home win over LAFC. The Timbers repeated their lineup in back-to-back matches for the second time this season, per the club, and the result did not follow. This was the first stop on a three-game road swing that continues next Saturday at San Diego FC.

A Band Without a Setlist

Possession is a nice stat to put on a postcard, but Portland had more of the ball and less of everything that mattered, including shots on target by a 7-2 margin. Minnesota's attackers are starting to look like a band that has stopped needing the setlist. When Pereyra plays, Chancalay connects and Yeboah finishes, the Loons do not need much of the ball to make a crowd lose its mind.
