Ashley Sanchez Sets Courage Single-Season Scoring Record in North Carolina's 2-0 Win Over Angel City
Ashley Sanchez scored twice, the second breaking the Courage's single-season scoring record per Angel City, as the North Carolina Courage beat Angel City FC 2-0 in Cary.

Some records fall to a wonder strike. Ashley Sanchez broke hers with help from her own goalkeeper. In the 78th minute on Wednesday night, Kailen Sheridan's ball forward found Sanchez, Sanchez finished from the middle of the box, and the North Carolina Courage had a new club single-season scoring record.
Sanchez scored both goals as the Courage beat Angel City FC 2-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. According to Angel City, the second was her 15th of the season, breaking the Courage's single-season scoring record. Angel City outshot the hosts 17 to 12, but North Carolina put more on target, cleared everything else and let its best player do the rest.
Sanchez Opens the Account
The first half was a slow burn. Angel City captain Sarah Gorden tracked back to snuff out an early Sanchez chance in the fourth minute, per the club, and Ryan Williams tested Angelina Anderson from distance in the 14th. Chioma Okafor got caught offside twice in five minutes, Ary Borges picked up a yellow card in the 21st, and Claire Emslie drew a save from Sheridan in the 31st.
Then, in the 41st minute, the Courage's favorite connection clicked again. Evelyn Ijeh slipped a through ball into the box, and Sanchez finished with her left foot into the bottom left corner. According to Angel City, it was her 14th goal of the season, keeping her atop the NWSL Golden Boot race.
North Carolina nearly doubled it before the break. Okafor had a shot blocked and then sent another over the bar in the 44th minute, and Sanchez even tried her luck from more than 35 yards. Angel City's best answer came deep in stoppage time, when Sheridan saved a long-range effort from Ally Sentnor.
Angel City Pushes Back
Interim head coach Leif Smerud went to his bench at halftime, sending on Riley Tiernan and Savy King for Taylor Suarez and Emslie. The changes brought more urgency. Carina Lageyre and Prisca Chilufya both had shots blocked in the 54th minute, and in the 61st Smerud introduced Sveindís Jónsdóttir, who was making her first appearance since Aug. 1, according to the club. She fired almost immediately, only to be blocked.
Smerud called Jónsdóttir "a very important player for us," adding, "She's been out a few weeks, so she also needs a bit of time to get back into tempo."
The Courage had their own disruption. Center back Maycee Bell went down twice and was replaced by Uno Shiragaki in the 59th minute, and play also stopped for a few moments when Sanchez needed attention in the 54th. She stayed on, which turned out to matter.
The Turning Point
Angel City's best chance of the night arrived in the 72nd minute, and Sheridan erased it. Tiernan found herself on the left side of the six-yard box and hit a left-footed shot toward the bottom left corner. Sheridan got down to it. A minute later Jónsdóttir broke on a fast break started by Borges and sent her shot just over the crossbar.
Six minutes after the save, Sheridan flipped from goalkeeper to playmaker. Her ball forward found Sanchez, and the forward finished from the center of the box straight down the middle for 2-0. A potential equalizer at one end became the record-breaker at the other, both involving the same pair of gloves.
The Final Push
Angel City threw everything at the Courage after that, and North Carolina threw bodies in the way. King had a shot blocked in the 81st minute, and Jónsdóttir pulled one wide from a tight angle in the 89th. In stoppage time it turned into a pinball machine: six Angel City attempts, four of them from Sentnor, all blocked. North Carolina finished with 30 clearances to Angel City's 9, which is the stat sheet's way of saying the Courage defended like their evening depended on it.
"Today we tried, but we lacked the final percentages to convert and to really get the performance and the result we want. North Carolina was one step ahead in a few key situations," Smerud said.
Star Turns
Ashley Sanchez: Two goals from four shots, three on target. She is a problem every week, and on Wednesday she was a problem with history attached.
Kailen Sheridan: Three saves and an assist. The Tiernan stop and the ball forward six minutes later were the night in miniature.
Evelyn Ijeh: The through ball for the opener was the kind of pass that makes a striker's job easy. She and Sanchez remain the most dangerous duo in the building whenever they share a field.
Ally Sentnor: Angel City's most persistent attacker took six shots. Only one reached the target, but she kept coming.
Sarah Gorden: The Angel City captain was everywhere early, and she was honest afterward. "Today it looked like we were a step behind, but I'm proud of my team because we left everything we had on the field," she said.

What It Means
North Carolina improves to 11-3-7 with 36 points, following up Saturday's 2-1 home win over Boston Legacy FC with another three points. The Courage also won the first meeting with Angel City this season, 2-1 in Los Angeles on May 31. They turn around quickly for a Saturday trip to the Kansas City Current.
Angel City falls to 7-5-8 with 26 points. This was the second match in four days for Smerud's side after Sunday's 0-0 draw with Gotham, a load he pointed to afterward, saying it is "natural that this is gonna cost some energy and we need to make sure we are recovered." Angel City visits Boston Legacy FC on Monday, Aug. 31.
Closing Take
Records are supposed to come with fireworks. Sanchez got hers with a goalkeeper's long ball and a calm finish, which feels about right for a player who has made scoring look routine all season. The Courage have a striker writing new chapters, and the rest of the league is still trying to figure out how to close the book on her.
