Gianna Paul's First Pro Goal and Kailen Sheridan's 50th Clean Sheet Lift Courage Past Reign
Gianna Paul scored the first goal of her professional career and Kailen Sheridan made five saves for her 50th career clean sheet as the North Carolina Courage beat Seattle Reign FC 1-0 at Lumen Field.

Some first goals are works of art. Gianna Paul's was a pinball that happened to land in the right slot, and nobody in a North Carolina Courage shirt cared one bit. Three minutes into the second half on Friday night at Lumen Field, the forward's shot from the center of the box took a deflection off a Seattle defender, looped over Claudia Dickey and dropped into the top left corner.
It was the first goal of Paul's professional career, and it was all the Courage needed. Kailen Sheridan made five saves for her 50th career clean sheet, and North Carolina beat Seattle Reign FC 1-0, snapping a three-match losing streak and jumping back above the playoff line in the process.
A Frantic Start, Then a Goalkeeper's Half
The Courage nearly scored before the stadium had settled. Ryan Williams fired over in the first minute, and in the fourth, Paul rose to meet a Riley Jackson corner and headed it off the crossbar. Then Seattle woke up, and Sheridan got to work.
In the fifth minute, Phoebe McClernon picked off a pass, played a quick one-two with Mia Fishel and forced a save, which is not the kind of thing center backs usually get to do in open play. Five minutes later, Maddie Mercado stole the ball and tested Sheridan from outside the box, and Seattle captain Jess Fishlock pulled a shot wide in the 16th. The best effort of the half came from Ryanne Brown in the 28th minute, a half-volley from distance that Sheridan had to stretch to keep out of the bottom left corner. Sofia Huerta forced another stop in the 39th, and McClernon headed just wide off a set piece in the 44th.
The Courage had their own moments, mainly through Ashley Sanchez, who had two efforts in quick succession in the 22nd minute, one blocked and one over. The fourth official did not even bother with stoppage time, and the teams went in level at 0-0.
The Turning Point: Paul's Ricochet
North Carolina came out of the break swinging. In the 47th minute alone, Paul had two shots blocked and Evelyn Ijeh headed wide off a Williams cross. The Courage kept the pressure on, and a minute later Paul tried again from the middle of the box. This time the deflection did the rest.
That goal changed the shape of the night. Seattle had to chase, and the Reign threw on Nerilia Mondesir and Madison Curry around the hour mark to do it. The chances came, too. Ainsley McCammon and Mercado both headed wide off Huerta deliveries in the 63rd and 64th minutes, and Mondesir came within inches in the 81st, sending a direct free kick from outside the box over the wall and off the crossbar.
The final 15 minutes, plus seven added on, were pure siege. Jordyn Bugg tested Sheridan from more than 35 yards in the 89th, then had a close-range chance from the six-yard box slide past the far post in stoppage time. Emeri Adames had one blocked and another fly over. Sheridan and her back line held.
Who Stood Out
Gianna Paul took four shots, scored once and hit the bar, which is a decent way to celebrate a first professional goal. According to the Courage, she has started all three matches since arriving in a midseason trade from the Kansas City Current, and she also drew the penalty that produced North Carolina's goal the week before.
Kailen Sheridan was the difference between a win and a frustrating draw. Her five saves preserved her 50th career clean sheet, and the club says she is just the third goalkeeper in NWSL history to reach that milestone. Fifty shutouts is a lot of nights of telling attackers no.
Natalie Jacobs wore the captain's armband in her first appearance since Aug. 16, per the Courage, and the back line in front of Sheridan finished with 20 clearances. That is a sturdy night for a group that had conceded two goals in each of its previous three matches.
Sofia Huerta was Seattle's best creator, supplying the deliveries for several of the Reign's better looks, and Phoebe McClernon got forward twice with two shots, one on target, from center back.
Jordyn Bugg also had a night worth noting despite the result. Seattle says she made her 50th NWSL regular season appearance for the club and is the youngest defender in league history to reach that mark.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Seattle outshot North Carolina 17 to 10 and put five on target to the Courage's two.
- Saves: Sheridan made five. Dickey was not credited with any.
- Corners: Seattle earned six corners to North Carolina's two.
- Possession: Close to even, with Seattle holding 51.9 percent.
- Interceptions: North Carolina made 13 to Seattle's seven, a big part of how it kept the Reign at arm's length.
What It Means
North Carolina moved to 13-3-11 with 42 points. The Courage had lost three straight before this trip, all by 2-1 scores, and the club said the win was its first in Seattle since 2018 and lifted it back above the playoff line. It also completed a regular season sweep of the Reign after a 3-1 home win on July 4.
Seattle dropped to 12-4-11 with 40 points. The Reign's own recap said the result knocked them out of the playoff places into ninth, with just five points separating third and ninth heading into the October international break. The Reign returned on Oct. 18 at the Chicago Stars, with only three regular season matches left after this one.
Closing Take
Playoff races are rarely won by masterpieces. They are won by deflections, last-ditch tackles and goalkeepers who refuse to blink. The Courage left Seattle with a scrappy, ugly, beautiful 1-0, and in October that is the only kind of beautiful that counts. Paul will tell the story of her first goal for years, even if the replay looks like a lucky bounce in a Pixar short.
