Natalie Jacobs' Stoppage-Time Winner Lifts Courage Past Spirit 4-3 After Washington Erases 3-0 Hole
North Carolina led 3-0 after 15 minutes, Washington rallied to 3-3 in the 90th, and Courage captain Natalie Jacobs won it 4-3 on a 95th-minute counterattack at Audi Field.

Hal Hershfelt's shot clanged off the left post in the 94th minute, and for one frozen second Audi Field was sure the comeback was about to be complete. Moments later, the North Carolina Courage captain was sprinting the other way.
Natalie Jacobs, the Courage's center back and captain, finished a stoppage-time counterattack in the 95th minute and the Courage beat the Washington Spirit 4-3 on Saturday evening. North Carolina led 3-0 after 15 minutes, Washington clawed all the way back to 3-3 in the 90th, and Jacobs turned a game that should have been a Spirit legend into a Courage heist.
Three Goals Before the Popcorn Got Cold
The Courage didn't ease into this one. Ally Schlegel headed over in the first minute, and moments later Ashley Sanchez slipped behind the Washington back line, took a pass from Shinomi Koyama and lifted a left-footed finish over Sandy MacIver. The clock read 1:27, which the Courage said made it their fastest goal of the season.
In the ninth minute, Schlegel won a scrappy battle in the box and Evelyn Ijeh tapped in from close range, a goal awarded after a VAR review. Six minutes later Sanchez stripped Tara Rudd at the edge of the Spirit box and fed Ijeh, who beat MacIver from outside the area into the bottom right corner.
That made it 3-0 at 14:13, the fastest 3-0 lead in Courage history according to the club, beating a 23:02 mark set against Portland in 2019. Ijeh's brace was the third fastest from kickoff in club history.
Washington spent the rest of the half trying to find its legs. Andi Sullivan, Hershfelt, Trinity Rodman and Kate Wiesner all fired wide, and Rodman's best look, from the left side of the box in first-half stoppage time, slid just past the left post. It was 3-0 at the break and the Spirit had not landed a punch.
The Four-Sub Reset
Washington's response at halftime was the soccer equivalent of flipping the board. Four changes at once: Rebeca Bernal for Sullivan, Tamara Bolt for Paige Metayer, Sofia Cantore for Claudia Martínez and Élisabeth Tsé for Esme Morgan. The Courage made one of their own, sending Hannah Betfort on for Sanchez.
It worked almost instantly. In the 47th minute Wiesner carried it up the left and found Rodman, who shook a defender and fired from the middle of the box into the top right corner. The Spirit said it was Rodman's ninth goal of the season, a single-season career high.
Three minutes later it was 3-2. Bolt chased down a loose ball in the box and set up Cantore, whose first shot was blocked before she finished the second chance from close range. The Spirit said it was Cantore's fifth league goal of the season.
From there it was a siege. Cantore had shots blocked in the 56th and 61st minutes. Kailen Sheridan stopped a Bolt header in the 62nd and a Rodman effort aimed at the top left corner in the 74th. Leicy Santos sent a free kick over. Madison Haugen, on in the 80th, pulled one high and wide. North Carolina's only real counterpunch was a Chioma Okafor shot from the six-yard box that MacIver saved in the 84th.
The equalizer came in the 90th minute, and it was pure chaos. Off a corner, Bernal's header was blocked, the ball stayed alive, and Bernal swept it in with her left foot from close range. Three goals down, three goals back. Washington's crowd, which the Spirit put at more than 14,000, was ready to build a statue.
The Turning Point
Six minutes of stoppage time, and all the momentum in one direction. In the 94th minute Santos teed up Hershfelt from outside the box and the shot smacked the left post.
That was the moment. Washington was pushing for a winner, and North Carolina broke. Jacobs drove forward from the back and never stopped, Feli Rauch found her in the box, and Jacobs finished low with her left foot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner in the 95th minute. The Courage called it the second goal of her career. It will be a tough one to top.
Washington still had one more swing. Rodman's left-footed shot in the 97th was saved by Sheridan in the bottom left corner, and Maycee Bell was booked a minute later.
Who Delivered
Evelyn Ijeh scored twice on two shots, both on target, in the first 15 minutes. North Carolina said they were her eighth and ninth goals of the season.
Ashley Sanchez had a goal and an assist before halftime. Per the Courage, the goal was her 11th of the season and the 30th of her career, and she now has 45 regular-season goal contributions. Koyama's assist was her fifth, which leads the team.
Trinity Rodman was Washington's engine: five shots, three on target, one goal, and she was still testing Sheridan in the 97th minute.
Kailen Sheridan made three saves, every one of them in the second half when the Spirit were coming in waves. Without the stops on Bolt and Rodman, Jacobs never gets her moment.
Natalie Jacobs took one shot all night. It was the only one that mattered.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Washington 20, North Carolina 9; on target, Washington 8, North Carolina 5.
- Possession: Washington 58.1 percent, North Carolina 41.9.
- Saves: Sheridan 3, MacIver 1.
- Corners: Washington 7, North Carolina 2.
- Fouls: North Carolina 17, Washington 5.
What It Means
North Carolina moves to 9-3-6 with 30 points and has won three straight, scoring 11 goals in that span: a 5-0 home win over Orlando, a 2-0 win at Denver and now this. Not bad for a team that had lost three in a row before that. It also squares the season series after Washington won 2-0 in Cary on July 11. Next up is a home date with the Houston Dash on Aug. 16.
Washington stays at 11-3-5 with 36 points but has now lost consecutive league matches for the first time this season, following a 1-0 home defeat to San Diego six days earlier. The Spirit head west to face Angel City FC on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 9 p.m. ET.
Closing Take
This was a three-act play with a twist ending nobody saw coming. Act one belonged to Ijeh and Sanchez, act two to Rodman, Cantore and Bernal, and the final scene to a center back who decided the best defense was a full-field sprint. Washington did everything a great comeback requires except finish it. North Carolina will take the points, the club record, and the most improbable hero of its season.
