For 87 minutes on Friday night, Katie Atkinson was the best player at Inter&Co Stadium. She stopped a penalty, she finished with 10 saves, and she had the Orlando Pride wondering whether someone had bricked up the goal. Then Julie Doyle found the one spot she could not reach.

Doyle came off the bench and struck a left-footed finish into the top left corner in the 88th minute, giving the Pride a 1-0 win over Chicago Stars FC in the club's first match at the newly renamed stadium. Orlando took 28 shots, put 10 on target and needed nearly every minute to turn one of them into a goal. Anna Moorhouse needed just two saves for the shutout, and those two pulled her level with Ashlyn Harris for the most regular-season saves in Orlando history.

Twenty Shots, No Goal

The first half was a one-team show with a surprise ending. Orlando took 20 of its 28 shots before the break, according to the club, and Haley McCutcheon nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute when she hit the crossbar from very close range off an Oihane Hernández cross.

After that, Atkinson took over. She stopped Angelina in the 12th minute, Marta in the 15th and Jacqueline Ovalle in the 24th. She denied an Ally Lemos shot from a tight angle in the 33rd and kept out another Angelina effort from distance two minutes later.

Then came the big one. In the 37th minute, Aaliyah Farmer fouled McCutcheon in the box, and after a VAR review ended with a penalty, Marta stepped up in the 43rd minute. Atkinson guessed right and saved her left-footed shot low to the left. Chicago's own recap noted she had eight saves by halftime, tying her season high before the second half even started, and she was not done. Solai Washington tested her twice more in first-half stoppage time.

Chicago's best moment of the half came in stoppage time too, when Farmer headed a Brianna Pinto cross on target and Moorhouse made the save.

Chicago Hits the Bar, Orlando Hits the Bench

Chicago changed things at halftime, sending on Leila Ouahabi and Kathrin Hendrich, and the Stars were far more dangerous after the break. Their best chance arrived in the 65th minute, when Jameese Joseph rattled the crossbar from the left side of the box after a Julia Grosso pass. Grosso, on as a 62nd-minute substitute, also forced Moorhouse into a save in the 74th.

Seb Hines answered with his bench. Orlando made a triple change in the 61st minute and then sent Doyle on for Marta in the 70th. Atkinson kept denying everyone, including Ovalle from the center of the box in the 86th minute, until the 88th, when Cori Dyke slipped a weighted through ball into the penalty area. Doyle took it in stride and finished with her left foot into the upper left corner.

The Pride say it was Doyle's first goal of 2026 and her first since March 15, 2025, which also came against Chicago. It was the eighth regular-season goal of her career, ninth on the club's all-time list. Dyke's assist was her first of the season and the second of her NWSL career, per the club.

Chicago had seven added minutes to find an answer, and the closest it came was a Manaka Hayashi shot that slid just wide in the sixth.

Performances Worth Your Time

Katie Atkinson made 10 saves, including the penalty stop, a new season high per the Stars. Losing 1-0 after that performance is the kind of thing that makes goalkeepers stare at the ceiling for a while.

Julie Doyle came on in the 70th minute and took one shot. It went in. That is efficient work for a substitute.

Anna Moorhouse did not have much to do, but her two saves on Farmer and Grosso were enough to tie Harris' club record of 289 regular-season saves, according to the Pride, and the clean sheet was Orlando's sixth of 2026.

Solai Washington, Ally Lemos, Angelina and Ovalle combined for 17 shots, which tells you how much of the game was played in front of Atkinson.

For Chicago, the club said Sam Staab reached 5,000 minutes in a Stars jersey and Elise Evans made her professional debut off the bench.

The Turning Point

Atkinson's penalty save in the 43rd minute. Orlando had dominated the half, and a goal there would have turned the rest of the night into a formality. Instead, Chicago went into halftime level, believed for another 45 minutes, and came within a crossbar of stealing the lead.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: Orlando 28, Chicago 10. On target: Orlando 10, Chicago 2.
  • Saves: Atkinson 10, Moorhouse 2.
  • Corners: Orlando 8, Chicago 1.
  • Clearances: Chicago 38, Orlando 20.
  • Possession: Orlando held 54.4 percent.

What It Means

Orlando moves to 7-2-8 with 23 points and stops a two-game losing streak, after back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Boston at home and at Utah. The club says it was also the Pride's fourth win in their last five home matches against Chicago dating back to 2023, and they had already beaten the Stars 3-0 on the road in March. Orlando heads to the North Carolina Courage on Friday, July 31.

Chicago falls to 4-0-12 with 12 points and has now lost three straight without scoring, after 2-0 defeats to Boston and Angel City. The Stars visit Racing Louisville on Aug. 1.

Hines summed it up in one breath. "We left it late, but most important thing is that we got the goal that we much needed and the three points that we much needed," the head coach said. "I've been in these games where you are relentless and you keep pushing and keep pushing and you get hurt in one moment and so I was so pleased with the players that they were able to get it to the final whistle and score the goal."

Closing Take

Orlando's night played out like a Souls game. You throw yourself at the boss, you die over and over, you learn the patterns, and eventually you land the hit that matters. Atkinson was a brutal final boss. Doyle was the player who finally read the moveset.
