Nicole Payne's First Career Goal Lifts Orlando Pride Past San Diego Wave 1-0
Nicole Payne scored her first professional goal in first-half stoppage time and Anna Moorhouse made five saves as the Orlando Pride beat San Diego Wave FC 1-0 at Snapdragon Stadium.

Nicole Payne picked a dramatic moment for her first professional goal. Deep into first-half stoppage time at Snapdragon Stadium, a long ball from Luana clipped a San Diego defender and dropped at Payne's feet outside the box. One swing of the right boot later, the ball was nestled in the bottom left corner.
That strike in the third minute of added time was the only goal of the night, and the Orlando Pride beat San Diego Wave FC 1-0 on Sunday in front of 12,149 fans. Payne was making her first start for the Pride. Anna Moorhouse made five saves for the shutout, and an Orlando side that had lost its previous two matches left Southern California with three very welcome points.
Banda Knocks, Haracic Answers
Barbra Banda was everywhere early. She headed an Ally Lemos set-piece delivery wide in the ninth minute, forced DiDi Haracic into a save with another header in the 15th, and had a shot blocked three minutes later. Lemos was the delivery service all night, and Orlando's dead balls kept San Diego's back line on edge.
San Diego had its moments too. Ludmila fired wide from the left side of the box in the second minute, and the Wave's best chance of the half came in the 33rd, when Lia Godfrey got a left foot to the ball from very close range and Moorhouse kept it out.
Then the half got spicy. Oihane Hernández, Kristen McNabb and Hailie Mace all went into the book within eight minutes. Rafaelle forced Haracic into a save with a 43rd-minute header, then sent another just over the bar in the first minute of stoppage time. Six minutes were added, and Orlando needed only three of them.
The Turning Point: Payne Arrives in Added Time
The decisive sequence started with a save at the other end. Gia Corley let fly from outside the box, Moorhouse held it in the center of the goal, and in that same minute the ball was going the other way. Luana's long pass deflected into Payne's path, and the forward did not hesitate. The Wave's own recap called it a bouncing shot. Nobody in purple cared how it bounced.
Dudinha forced Moorhouse into another save from distance before the break, but the Pride went into the locker room up 1-0. The Pride had a lead. The Wave had a problem.
Moorhouse and the Wall
The second half was mostly San Diego with the ball and Orlando with an answer. Head coach Seb Hines lost two attackers to injury along the way, with Kerry Abello replacing Julie Doyle in the 52nd minute and Seven Castain coming on for Luana in the 77th. The Wave emptied the bench looking for a spark.
Gabi Portilho came closest. She dragged a shot wide from the center of the box in the 78th minute, then got her head on a McNabb cross in the 87th, only for Moorhouse to keep it out at the bottom left corner. Melanie Barcenas tested the Orlando keeper again in the first minute of stoppage time. Seven minutes of added time produced three blocked shots and one Barcenas effort that sailed high and wide, and that was that.
Orlando had chances to make it comfortable. Haley McCutcheon headed wide from close range off an 80th-minute corner, and Castain skied a fast-break look set up by Banda three minutes later.
"Incredible game. Great effort, as well, from start to finish," Hines said after the match. "We talked about it before the game and getting back to who we are as an Orlando Pride team and it was on full display here tonight in San Diego."
Star Turns
Nicole Payne played 62 minutes, took one shot and scored with it. Efficiency like that would make a hedge fund manager weep. For a player in her first Pride start, it was the cleanest possible audition.
Anna Moorhouse was the reason the goal held. Five saves, including the point-blank stop on Godfrey and the late one on Portilho, gave her a third clean sheet of the season, according to the club. San Diego put five shots on target, and Moorhouse handled every one.
Barbra Banda did not score, but she took six shots, drew three fouls and spent the evening dragging San Diego defenders around. Her influence showed in what she opened up for others, including the 83rd-minute ball that sent Castain through.
The milestones piled up too. McCutcheon made her 100th appearance across all competitions for the Pride, the fourth player in club history to reach that mark, per Orlando. Abello's appearance off the bench was her 92nd regular-season match for the club, moving her past Kylie Nadaner for the most regular-season games in Pride history.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: San Diego 57.9 percent, Orlando 42.1 percent. The Wave had the ball; the Pride had the goal.
- Shots: San Diego led 17 to 14, but only five of the Wave's attempts were on target.
- Saves: Moorhouse made five, Haracic two.
- Defensive work: Orlando made 27 clearances to San Diego's six and recorded 16 interceptions to the Wave's nine.
- Discipline: Orlando picked up four yellow cards to San Diego's one.
What It Means
For Orlando, it was a reset. The Pride arrived off a 2-1 loss at Boston Legacy FC and a 3-1 defeat at Denver Summit FC, and left 4-2-5 with 14 points. It was also the club's first road win since a 3-0 victory at the Chicago Stars on March 25. According to the Pride, the result keeps them unbeaten in five trips to San Diego to face the Wave, and they have now won nine of their 11 regular-season matches in California all-time.
For San Diego, the loss stung. The Wave came in unbeaten in three, with wins at Angel City FC and at home against the Washington Spirit before a 2-2 draw at Houston, and now sit 7-1-4 with 22 points. It was San Diego's third loss in six home matches this season. The Wave also played without defender Perle Morroni, who served a yellow-card accumulation suspension.
Up next, Orlando hosts Bay FC on May 29, a match the club billed as its last before the NWSL pauses for the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup. San Diego heads to Chicago on May 31.
The Closing Take
Every season has a few games decided by someone nobody circled on the preview sheet. Banda drew the attention, Moorhouse did the heavy lifting, and a forward making her first Pride start delivered the moment. The Wave will look at the possession numbers and feel robbed. The Pride will look at the table and feel just fine.
