Haley McCutcheon Strikes Early, Cosette Morché Shines in Debut as Orlando Pride Edge Washington Spirit
Haley McCutcheon scored in the third minute and debuting goalkeeper Cosette Morché made three saves as the Orlando Pride beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 at Audi Field.

Three minutes. That is how long it took the Orlando Pride to score on Sunday, and it turned out to be all the offense they would need. The rest of the afternoon was a survival exercise, starring two posts, one crossbar, 44 clearances and a goalkeeper making her NWSL debut.
Haley McCutcheon finished a Barbra Banda breakaway in the third minute, and the Pride beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 at Audi Field in front of 16,417 fans. Washington owned 72.6 percent of the ball and fired 23 shots, but Cosette Morché, starting in goal for her first NWSL appearance, made three saves and the Orlando back line handled the rest.
Banda Starts It, McCutcheon Finishes It
Orlando's opener came out of pressure. Banda's pressure forced a Spirit giveaway, she sprinted clear down the flank and squared it, and McCutcheon met it first time into the bottom left corner. According to the Pride, it was their earliest goal of the 2026 season.
Washington responded like a team that had been insulted. Sofia Cantore forced Morché into her first save in the eighth minute, and in the 12th the Spirit hit the woodwork twice in one sequence: Cantore struck the right post from the middle of the box after a set piece, and Tamara Bolt hit the left post in the same minute. Morché did not have to touch either one. Sometimes debuts come with a little help.
The rest of the half was Washington knocking and Orlando bolting the door. Trinity Rodman fired over in the 30th minute and just wide in the 40th, Rosemonde Kouassi had a shot blocked, and Tara Rudd pushed a close-range chance wide from a corner in the 43rd. McCutcheon, meanwhile, kept shooting for Orlando, sending two efforts from distance over and wide around the half-hour mark. It was 1-0 at the break, and the Spirit had nothing to show for their territory.
The Spirit Throw the Kitchen Sink
Washington sent on Gift Monday at halftime, and later added Paige Metayer, Claudia Martínez, Ashley Hatch and Gabrielle Carle. Hatch's entrance in the 74th minute was a moment of its own, her first home appearance in more than 15 months, according to the Spirit.
The chances kept coming. Rodman headed just over from the six-yard box in the 54th minute, Monday had a shot blocked in the 69th, and Carle had an effort blocked from close range in the 79th. Orlando lost Julie Doyle to an injury in the 62nd minute, and Banda took a yellow card in the 70th, but the shape held. Washington swung in 29 crosses to Orlando's 8, and the Pride kept heading them clear.
The Pride nearly killed it off at the other end. McCutcheon forced Sandy MacIver into a save from the left side of the six-yard box in the 85th minute, and substitute Nicole Payne sent two shots narrowly wide in stoppage time.
The Turning Point
The fourth official put up 11 minutes of added time, and Washington used every one of them. Carle shot wide in the fourth minute of stoppage. In the fifth, Hatch headed against the bar from point blank range after a corner. In the eighth, Morché stopped Metayer's header from close range, and Kouassi headed wide moments later. Esme Morgan blasted over in the 10th.
Then, in the 12th minute of added time, Hatch got another header on target, and Morché dove to keep it out. That was the save of the afternoon, in the final seconds, and the cherry on top of a debut. Per the Pride, she became the first goalkeeper in club history to record a shutout in her NWSL debut.
"Yeah, we had a little bit of luck," Pride head coach Seb Hines said. "Good teams are always going to create opportunities to score, and the post helped us out, but a really good collective performance from everyone."
Hines also credited the details. "We took an early lead and the attention to detail was really good with players playing their roles and doing their responsibilities and throwing their bodies on the line throughout the whole game," he said.
Star Turns
Haley McCutcheon: The goal, four shots and two on target. Her third goal of the season matched the single-season career high she set in 2025, per the Pride.
Barbra Banda: The assist was her second of 2026 and her ninth regular season assist with the Pride, tying Alex Morgan for second in club history, according to the club. She also committed six fouls, which is the price of pressing that hard all afternoon.
Cosette Morché: Three saves, zero goals allowed, one historic debut. She stayed calm under a late flood of headers.
Trinity Rodman: Six shots for Washington, the most on either side, and none on target. One of those days.
Stats That Matter

- Shots on goal: Washington 3, Orlando 2.
- Clearances: Orlando 44, Washington 10.

What It Means
Orlando improves to 8-2-11 with 26 points. According to the Pride, the result was their fourth consecutive regular season win at Audi Field, making them only the second team in NWSL history to win four straight regular season matches at the Spirit's home. It was also the 50th regular season win for Hines, who the club said is the sixth coach in league history to reach the milestone and the fifth to do it with one club. The Pride host the Utah Royals on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Washington falls to 11-4-6 with 37 points, though the Spirit said they will hold on to second place after the weekend. Orlando avenged a 4-2 home loss to Washington on May 2. The Spirit host Bay FC on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Closing Take
Hines called it gritty, and that undersells it. Washington took 23 shots, hit the frame three times and still went home empty-handed. Orlando spent most of the afternoon living in its own penalty area, and it turns out that is a perfectly fine address when the debutant in goal keeps the doors locked.
