Spirit Rally From 2-0 Down to Draw Racing Louisville 2-2 as Rosemonde Kouassi Sets Up Both
Rosemonde Kouassi set up Sofia Cantore and Leicy Santos as the Washington Spirit came back from 2-0 down to draw Racing Louisville FC 2-2.

For 45 minutes, Racing Louisville FC looked like it had finally cracked the home-opener code. Then Rosemonde Kouassi went to work, and Lynn Family Stadium got a very familiar ending.
The Washington Spirit erased a two-goal halftime deficit to draw Racing 2-2 on Friday night. Kayla Fischer and Emma Sears put Louisville up 2-0 before the break, but Sofia Cantore and Leicy Santos answered in the second half, both off Kouassi assists, as the Spirit dominated the ball and Jordyn Bloomer made eight saves to keep the hosts from losing it outright. Both clubs sit at 0-1-1 with 1 point.
Bloomer Holds the Line, Racing Strikes
Washington came out swinging. In the seventh minute, Trinity Rodman got two quick looks from the middle of the box and Bloomer stopped both. A minute later Kouassi was clean through, and Bloomer stood tall again. Three saves inside two minutes is how you set the tone in a home opener.
Racing made it count. In the 28th minute, Sears teed up Fischer, who hit a left-footed shot from outside the box that beat Sandy MacIver through the middle of the goal. 1-0, and according to the Spirit, Racing's first lead of the young season.
Washington kept knocking. Santos tested Bloomer from distance in the 32nd minute, and Cantore and Kouassi both missed the target before the break. Then Racing struck on the counter. In the 43rd minute, Fischer won the ball and Sears took off; Racing describes a run that covered nearly three-quarters of the field. She got goal-side of her marker and finished low into the bottom left corner. 2-0 at the half, with the Spirit owning the ball and Louisville owning the scoreboard.
The Spirit Flip It
It took Washington five minutes of the second half to get back into it. After back-to-back corners, Kouassi found Cantore outside the box, and the Italian forward ripped a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner in the 50th minute. Per the Spirit, it was her fifth NWSL goal.
From there it was all Washington. Rodman forced another save in the 55th minute and dragged a shot wide in the 60th. Louisville's best reply came in the 68th, when Sears fired from the left side of the box and made MacIver earn her only save of the night. Moments later, the Spirit lost Rodman, who had been down for an injury stoppage a few minutes earlier and was replaced by Claudia Martínez. Gift Monday came on for Cantore at the same time.
The equalizer arrived anyway. In the 74th minute, Kouassi burst into the right side of the box and picked out Santos, who finished first time with her left foot. 2-2.
The final stretch got scrappy. Sears and Taylor Flint were booked, Deborah Abiodun and Santos forced late saves from Bloomer, and Tamara Bolt had a shot blocked in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Neither side found a winner.
The Turning Point
Cantore's goal, five minutes after the restart. Racing's halftime message, per head coach Bev Yanez, was about matching the intensity Washington was sure to bring. Instead, the Spirit scored before Louisville had settled, and the comeback suddenly felt inevitable. "It's unfortunate, you don't ever want to be in a position where you're up 2-0 and you're tied 2-2 with your home-opening match," Yanez said. She also put her finger on the problem: "there were multiple times in the transition moments that we just turned it over too quickly."
Kouassi Pulls the Strings, Bloomer Saves the Night
Kouassi was the best player on the field. Two assists, two shots, one on target, and a constant menace down the left. Per the Spirit, the Santos goal was her eighth regular season assist and 11th overall. Santos was right behind her: four shots, three on target and the equalizer, her fifth goal across all competitions for Washington, according to the club. Rodman was dangerous before she left, with five shots and three on target.
On the other end, Bloomer was the reason Racing got anything. Eight saves against 21 Spirit shots. "Definitely wasn't short of work tonight," she said, before describing a perfect night that looks nothing like this one: "My ideal game is that I never have to touch, and I can keep a clean sheet with zero saves on the night."
Racing's attack ran through Fischer and Sears, and they were efficient about it, each finishing with a goal and an assist. Sears put both of her shots on target.

What It Means
Neither team has won yet. Washington opened with a 1-0 home loss to the Portland Thorns, so this point at least came with some momentum. Per the Spirit, the draw extended its unbeaten run against Racing to 12 matches. Washington's stoppage-time substitution also brought Andi Sullivan back for her first action since October 2024, according to the club. The Spirit host the Utah Royals at Audi Field on Wednesday, March 25.
Racing lost 2-1 at the North Carolina Courage in its opener and now has a draw that feels more like a loss. Captain Lauren Milliet said as much. "I think we do need to find a way to close those matches out," she said, adding, "Obviously, we're okay with a point, but we want the three." Per the Spirit, it was Louisville's sixth consecutive home opener to end in a tie, and Racing says it was the fifth draw in seven meetings between these teams at Lynn Family Stadium. Next is a two-game road swing that starts against Seattle Reign FC on Saturday and ends in Houston against the Dash the following Friday.
Closing Take
Racing's home openers have officially become Groundhog Day. Same building, same result, same sinking feeling as the clock runs down. Bill Murray eventually escaped the loop by getting better every day, and Louisville has the raw ingredients to do the same: a goalkeeper in form, two forwards who clearly know where to find each other, and a lead that, next time, it will need to protect with the ball instead of without it. Washington, meanwhile, showed what 72 percent possession looks like when it finally turns into goals.
