Yazmeen Ryan Heads In Equalizer as Denver Summit Draw 1-1 at San Diego Wave
Melanie Barcenas gave San Diego Wave FC the lead, but Yazmeen Ryan headed in a Janine Sonis cross in the 58th minute as Denver Summit FC drew 1-1 at Snapdragon Stadium.

Yazmeen Ryan has turned into Denver Summit FC's most dependable answer to a hard question. Down a goal on the road, against a San Diego side that had won four of its five games when leading at halftime, the Summit needed one. Ryan rose to meet a Janine Sonis cross in the 58th minute and headed it into the bottom left corner.
That header earned Denver a 1-1 draw with San Diego Wave FC on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium, in front of 13,463 fans. Teenager Melanie Barcenas had given the Wave a 35th-minute lead, and San Diego never found a second, with Barcenas clipping the crossbar two minutes after the equalizer.
A Lively Start, Then a Wave Takeover
Both goalkeepers were busy early. Abby Smith pushed Trinity Byars' second-minute shot out of her top left corner, and Sandra Paños answered by saving Ally Brazier's effort in the eighth. In the 10th minute Smith stopped Barcenas from distance, and Denver said that save made Smith the 12th goalkeeper in league history to reach 300 saves.
The Summit then had to reshuffle. Center back Eva Gaetino went off injured in the 16th minute, with Megan Reid replacing her, and San Diego slowly took control.
The breakthrough arrived in the 35th minute. Gia Corley found Barcenas on the right, the Wave said she cut inside and beat several defenders, and her right-footed finish from the middle of the box flew into the top of the net. The Wave said it was Barcenas' fourth goal of the season, the most by any teenager in the NWSL this year.
Denver's recap admitted the rest of the half belonged to San Diego, noting the Wave held 70 percent of possession over the final 15 minutes and the Summit did not attempt a shot after the eighth minute. Smith kept the deficit at one by saving a Lia Godfrey shot from distance just before halftime.
Ryan Answers, and the Bar Says No
Denver coach Nick Cushing went to his bench at the break, sending on Emma Regan for Devin Lynch and Melissa Kössler for Natalie Means, and the Summit came out much sharper. In the 58th minute Sonis whipped a cross in from the left and Ryan headed it home from the center of the box.
San Diego nearly hit straight back. Two minutes later Barcenas let fly from outside the box and smacked the crossbar. In the 65th Smith had to save a Kristen McNabb shot from the left side of the box, and the game turned into a genuine back-and-forth.
The Wave made a triple change in the 72nd minute, including a debut for midfielder Laila Harbert, acquired from Arsenal on July 28, per the club. Brooklyn Courtnall, on loan from Bay FC, debuted in the 83rd. Substitute Adriana Leon put the ball in the net at one point, but the Wave said it was ruled out for offside.
Denver had the better of the closing stages. Natasha Flint, a 59th-minute sub, fired three shots in the final half hour, the last of them a shot from distance that slid just wide in the 88th after a Sonis pass. Kössler also missed from distance in the 83rd. Gabi Portilho's 90th-minute effort off a corner went high and wide, and that was that.
Ryan, Sonis and Smith Carry Denver
Ryan has become appointment viewing. Denver said the header was her fifth goal of the season, matching her NWSL single-season career high, and that she has now scored in back-to-back matches for the first time since 2023. The club also noted she has played all 90 minutes in 12 straight matches. She led all players with four shots.
Sonis, wearing the captain's armband again, keeps stacking numbers. Per Denver, the assist was her fourth of the season and lifted her to 12 goal contributions, a new NWSL career high, with seven contributions in Denver's last seven matches. Six days after deciding the Utah game, she set up the equalizer here.
Smith made four saves, and in a game where San Diego put five of its seven shots on target, every one of them mattered.
For San Diego, Barcenas was the most dangerous player on the field: three shots, two on target, one goal and the woodwork. Corley's assist was her fourth of the season, according to the Wave, the most on the team and a career high. And before kickoff, the club honored McNabb for becoming the first player in Wave history to reach 100 appearances.
The Turning Point
The halftime changes. Denver ended the first half without a shot in more than 35 minutes and looked second best. With Regan and Kössler on, the Summit took seven of their 11 shots after the break, and the equalizer arrived 13 minutes into the half. San Diego had been in control. After the equalizer, the Wave were the ones scrambling for a response.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Denver 11, San Diego 7, but San Diego put 5 on target to Denver's 2.
- Saves: Smith 4, Paños 1.
- Possession: San Diego 54.7 percent, Denver 45.3.
- Tackles: Denver won 13 of 14, San Diego 6 of 6.
- Fouls: San Diego 10, Denver 4.
What It Means
San Diego moves to 10-3-7 with 33 points. Denver's recap noted this was the Wave's first home draw of the season and that Ryan's goal was the first the Wave had conceded at home in a second half all year. Coming off a 1-0 loss at Gotham, the Wave host the Utah Royals on Friday, Aug. 21.
Denver goes to 6-6-7 with 24 points and, as the club pointed out, has taken five points from its last four matches. It also avoided a second loss to San Diego after the Wave rallied from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in Colorado in April. The Summit visit the Portland Thorns on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Closing Take
A road point after trailing at halftime is a result Denver will happily take. Denver walked into Snapdragon, took San Diego's best first-half punch, and adjusted at the half like a team that knows exactly who its closers are. Sonis serves, Ryan finishes. At this point it is less a play and more a catchphrase.
