Kennedy Wesley's Stoppage-Time Header Seals San Diego Wave's 2-0 Win Over Kansas City Current

A Laney Rouse own goal and a stoppage-time Kennedy Wesley header gave San Diego Wave FC a 2-0 win over the Kansas City Current, its first home win ever against KC.

For six straight league meetings, the Kansas City Current had been San Diego Wave FC's recurring nightmare. On Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium, the Wave finally woke up on the right side of the bed.

San Diego beat Kansas City 2-0, getting an own goal from Laney Rouse five minutes into the second half and a stoppage-time header from Kennedy Wesley after Rouse was sent off. According to the Wave, it ended a six-match league winless run against the Current dating to Sept. 16, 2023, and it was the club's first home win over Kansas City ever.

A Goalkeepers' First Half

The opening 45 minutes were a stalemate with plenty of noise. Kansas City came out sharp: Vanessa DiBernardo forced Sandra Paños into a diving save from distance in the fourth minute, and Haley Hopkins headed a corner just wide two minutes later. Elizabeth Ball also missed from the middle of the box off a set piece in the 14th.

San Diego grew into it. Melanie Barcenas tested Lorena twice from outside the box in the 28th and 29th minutes, the second one requiring what the Current described as a full-extension dive. Mimi Van Zanten forced a kick save from a tight angle in the 36th, and Trinity Byars and Gia Corley both missed the target from good spots.

Kansas City's best look came in the 38th minute. Lo'eau LaBonta forced a turnover high up the field and slipped Debinha in, and Debinha curled a shot toward the bottom left corner that Paños pushed away. Hopkins could not steer the follow-up on target. Temwa Chawinga and Michelle Cooper both fired wide before the break, and it stayed 0-0.

The Turning Point

The 50th minute, and it came off a cross that never reached its intended target. Van Zanten kept the play alive down the right, Kimmi Ascanio worked the ball to Barcenas, and Barcenas swung a cross to the back post that went in off Rouse. VAR confirmed the goal, and the Wave had the lead they would never surrender.

It mattered because of how this San Diego team plays with a lead. The Wave said they improved to 12-0-3 this season when scoring first, and that they have conceded an NWSL-low two second-half goals. Kansas City needed to break that pattern. It never did.

Kansas City Pushes, Paños Holds

The Current threw on bodies and kept firing crosses, 20 of them in all, but only two found their target. Rouse had a shot blocked in the 55th minute and forced Paños into a save toward the top left corner in the 60th. Chawinga made way for Amelia White in the 61st, and coach Chris Armas added Rocky Rodríguez and Penelope Hocking in the 71st.

San Diego nearly killed it off from a corner in the 70th minute, when Kristen McNabb and Wesley both missed from very close range within seconds of each other. That left the door open, and Kansas City almost walked through it in the 79th. Cooper zipped a ball across the penalty area for Hopkins, whose shot from the middle of the box was headed for the bottom right corner until Paños got there.

Then the night unraveled for Rouse. In the 89th minute, VAR checked a foul on Gabi Portilho near the box and ruled out a penalty, and Rouse was shown a second yellow card. Kenza Dali curled the free kick into the area a minute into stoppage time, and Wesley flicked a header from very close range into the bottom right corner. Game over.

Wesley, Dali and a Wall Called Paños

Wesley turned in a full night's work at both ends: two shots, one goal, and a central role in a back line that made 41 clearances. The Wave said it was her second goal of the season and that she passed 5,000 NWSL minutes for San Diego, joining Kristen McNabb, Kailen Sheridan and Naomi Girma as the only players to reach that mark for the club.

Dali, the Wave captain, collected her third assist of the season. Per the club, it was her sixth with San Diego, tied for third-most in club history.

Paños earned the clean sheet with four saves, and the Wave noted it was the second clean sheet of her NWSL career. The stops on DiBernardo, Debinha and Hopkins were the three that kept the scoreline clean.

For Kansas City, Lorena made three saves and kept the Current level through halftime. Hopkins worked hard for five shots but put only one on target. Rouse's night is the one that will sting: an own goal, a shot on target at the other end and two yellow cards.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: San Diego 15, Kansas City 14. On target: 4 apiece.
  • Possession: San Diego 57.7 percent, Kansas City 42.3 percent.
  • Clearances: San Diego 41, Kansas City 15.
  • Crosses: Kansas City attempted 20 and completed two.
  • Saves: Paños 4, Lorena 3.

What It Means

San Diego moved to 14-3-8 with 45 points, and the Wave said those wins and points totals are single-season club records, along with eight home wins. The Current's own recap listed San Diego in second place. It was the Wave's second straight win after a 2-1 home victory over the North Carolina Courage, and the club said it also snapped Kansas City's run of scoring in eight consecutive NWSL matches. Next up is a trip to Racing Louisville FC on Friday, Sept. 25.

Kansas City fell to 11-5-9 with 38 points, seventh in the table according to the Current. The loss ended a three-match unbeaten run that included wins over the North Carolina Courage and Bay FC and a 2-2 draw with Orlando. The first meeting this season, in July in Kansas City, finished 2-2. The Current return home to face Denver Summit FC on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Closing Take

Every long losing streak eventually gets its Groundhog Day ending, the morning when it is finally Feb. 3. San Diego's came via a deflected cross, a second yellow and a header from a center back who had missed from point-blank range about 20 minutes earlier. Not pretty, maybe. Doesn't matter. In a playoff race, nobody hands out style points.
