Melanie Barcenas Ties NWSL Single-Season Teen Goal Record as San Diego Wave Edge North Carolina Courage

Gia Corley and 18-year-old Melanie Barcenas scored as San Diego Wave FC beat the North Carolina Courage 2-1 at Snapdragon Stadium despite Ashley Sanchez's 19th goal.

Melanie Barcenas got the ball in space, shaped to go one way, cut back onto her left foot and rolled it into the bottom left corner like she had done it a thousand times in the backyard. She is 18. The NWSL record book might want to start saving her a page.

Barcenas' 72nd-minute goal gave San Diego Wave FC a 2-1 win over the North Carolina Courage on Saturday afternoon at Snapdragon Stadium, in front of 9,853 fans. Gia Corley opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, Ashley Sanchez pulled one back with a beauty in the 82nd, and the Wave held on to move three points clear of a Courage side that arrived level with them on points.

A Goal Erased, Then One That Stood

San Diego thought it had a dream start inside two minutes when Barcenas found the net, but the goal was chalked off for offside in the buildup, according to the club, with ESPN's feed flagging Perle Morroni. Barcenas then lifted a shot just over in the fourth minute, and Trinity Byars fired one narrowly left of the post in the 11th.

The Courage had their moments in a lively opening 20 minutes. Ryan Williams forced Sandra Paños into a save from the middle of the box in the 13th minute, and Chioma Okafor dragged a left-footed effort just wide in the 19th. In between, Kenza Dali tested Kailen Sheridan from distance.

Then came the opener. Brooklyn Courtnall, making her first start for San Diego per the Wave, drove down the right and sent the ball into the area, where the Courage say it took a deflection on its way through. Corley was waiting in the center of the box and finished right-footed into the bottom right corner. The club said it was her first goal of the season.

Paños Builds a Wall

North Carolina responded the way good teams do, by piling on pressure. The best sequence came in the 30th minute: Sanchez let fly from the left side of the box toward the top right corner, Paños got there, and when Okafor followed up from the center of the box, Paños was back up to stop that one too. Feli Rauch blazed over off the ensuing corner, Erica Parkinson fired high from distance in the 37th, and Sanchez had two efforts in the 43rd, one blocked and one high and wide. Okafor was booked for a bad foul a minute later, and the Wave took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half opened with the hosts pushing for a cushion. Byars forced Sheridan into a low save in the 49th minute, and Lia Godfrey was denied from the middle of the box in the 55th. The Courage kept coming too. Evelyn Ijeh, caught offside twice in the half, got a clean look from the left side of the box in the 61st minute, and Paños smothered it.

Barcenas, Courtnall and a Goalkeeper Clinic

The 72nd minute belonged to the teenager. According to the Wave, Courtnall won the ball back in midfield and slipped Barcenas through. Barcenas did the rest, cutting in and steering a left-footed finish from the center of the box into the bottom left corner. It was her sixth goal of the season, and the club says that ties the NWSL single-season record for goals by a teenager. It was also the eighth goal of her career, moving her into fourth place in league history for goals scored as a teen, and her second game-winner of the season.

Courtnall deserves her own paragraph. In her first start for the club she played all 90 minutes, had a hand in both goals per the Wave and led the team with four interceptions. Fittingly or painfully, depending on your allegiance, the Courage's own recap identified her as a former Courage defender.

Paños was the reason the margin held. She made five saves, several of them from inside the box, while Sheridan made three at the other end.

For the Courage, Sanchez was the brightest light, which is becoming a habit. She led all players with four shots, put two on target and scored a gorgeous one: in the 82nd minute, Shinomi Koyama found her on the left side of the box and Sanchez curled a right-footed shot into the top right corner. North Carolina says it was her 19th goal of the regular season, one shy of the NWSL single-season record, and she entered the year with 19 career regular season goals. That is not a breakout. That is a reinvention.

The Turning Point

The 72nd-minute goal changed everything. Before it, the Courage were one swing from level: they had outshot San Diego 9-4 in the first half and kept Paños working overtime. After it, they needed two goals in the final 18 minutes, and Sanchez's strike came with only eight left plus stoppage time. Williams had a shot blocked in the 85th minute, and substitute Bia Gomes' long-range effort in the fourth minute of stoppage time was saved by Paños.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: North Carolina 13, San Diego 9.
  • Shots on goal: North Carolina 6, San Diego 5.
  • Saves: Paños 5, Sheridan 3.
  • Crosses: North Carolina attempted 13 and completed three. San Diego tried three and completed none.
  • Clearances: San Diego 20, North Carolina 8.

What It Means

The teams arrived even on 39 points, and now San Diego sits at 13-3-8 with 42 while North Carolina stays at 12-3-9 with 39. The Wave say the result extended their unbeaten run at Snapdragon Stadium to four matches, their longest of the season, and it was a sharp response to a 1-0 loss at Seattle six days earlier. San Diego hosts the Kansas City Current on Friday, Sept. 18.

For the Courage, it was a jolt after a 6-0 rout at Chicago the previous weekend. They head home next to face Gotham FC with Sanchez chasing history.

Closing Take

This felt like a preview of a playoff matchup, and both teams can take something from it. San Diego has a teenager rewriting record books and a goalkeeper who refuses to blink. North Carolina has a scorer chasing the single-season record and a sense that it outplayed the scoreline in stretches. But in this league, tables are not built on vibes. The Wave banked the points, and Barcenas banked another chapter.
