Lia Godfrey and Gia Corley Strike Early as San Diego Wave Punch Playoff Ticket at Orlando Pride
Lia Godfrey and Gia Corley scored inside 22 minutes, and San Diego Wave FC held off Barbra Banda's penalty to beat the Orlando Pride 2-1 and clinch a 2026 NWSL playoff berth.

The San Diego Wave did not waste time on Friday night. Four minutes in, Trinity Byars held the ball up and laid it off to Lia Godfrey, and the rookie shifted onto her right foot and beat Cosette Morche low to the bottom left corner. By the 22nd minute, Gia Corley had pounced on a rebound to make it 2-0, and the Orlando Pride were chasing a game that had barely started.
Barbra Banda pulled one back from the penalty spot early in the second half, but that was as close as Orlando got. San Diego won 2-1 at Inter&Co Stadium and, in doing so, clinched a place in the 2026 NWSL Playoffs, the second club to lock one up this season. By the end of the night, the Wave were posing for photos in black shirts that said exactly that.
Fast Starts Are a Wave Specialty
If you have watched San Diego this season, the opening was not a surprise. The club's notes say the Wave have now scored four goals inside the opening five minutes this season, the most of any NWSL team. Orlando actually had the first look, when Sandra Paños saved from Solai Washington in the opening minute. Then the Wave flipped the field.
Godfrey's goal was a lesson in patience, with Byars holding play up until her teammate arrived in the box, and the finish was cold. Melanie Barcenas forced Morche into a save in the 12th minute, Banda answered with a shot that Paños kept out of the bottom right corner a minute later, and the teams traded blows until the 22nd.
That is when Orlando's night got heavier. Byars got a shot away from the center of the box, Morche saved it, and Corley was the first to react, finishing from the left side of the six-yard box into the top left corner. The Pride's own recap said the sequence began with a turnover in their box and that Morche stopped two efforts before Corley pounced.
Orlando interim head coach Yolanda Thomas did not sugarcoat it afterward. "Tough result for where we are," she said. "We gift them a goal early on and then we're kind of having to dig ourselves out."
The Turning Point: Banda's Penalty, and What Came Next
The match had one real hinge, and it came three minutes after halftime. Kennedy Wesley was penalized for fouling Banda in the box, and after a delay for treatment, Banda stepped up in the 52nd minute and rolled her penalty into the bottom right corner. Suddenly Orlando had life and the crowd had a reason to get loud.
The Wave's response was what separated a nervy finish from a collapse. Rather than sit on the lead, San Diego kept the ball and kept probing. Godfrey went close from distance in the 54th, Kenza Dali forced a save from Morche in the 57th, and Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall swapped in Laurina Fazer and Ludmila just before the hour. Fazer nearly provided the dagger in the 75th minute, hitting the right post from the left side of the box.
Orlando's best second-half chances were a Haley McCutcheon header that went wide off a corner in the 61st minute and a Banda effort blocked deep in stoppage time. With six minutes of added time and plenty of stoppages, the Wave held firm.
Who Stood Out
Lia Godfrey scored her sixth goal of the season, which the club says is the second most among NWSL rookies this year. She finished with four shots.
Trinity Byars was the engine, with three shots, two on target, and the assist on the opener. Per San Diego, that gave her 13 goal contributions this season, second most in a single season in club history behind Alex Morgan's 17 in 2022.
Gia Corley scored in a second straight match, and the club says she has three goals in her last four appearances.
Barbra Banda remains a one-woman problem for any defense. Orlando's notes say the penalty was her 17th goal of the season, extending her own club record, tying for the fourth-highest single-season total in NWSL history and marking her first career goal against the Wave.
Cosette Morche made four saves to keep Orlando within reach.
Forward Summer Yates, who came off the bench, pointed straight at the opening minutes. "It seems like we either have really good or really bad starts," she said. "For us, a big focus is our 'Big Five Moments,' and that's just taking care of business in the first five minutes."
Stats That Matter
- Possession: San Diego held 61.2 percent of the ball.
- Passing: The Wave completed 519 of 603 passes to Orlando's 290 of 372.
- Shots: San Diego led 15 to 11 and put six on target to Orlando's three.
- Saves: Morche made four, Paños two.
- Interceptions: Orlando made 20, the clearest sign of how much of the night it spent chasing.
What It Means
San Diego moved to 16-3-8 with 51 points and won its fourth straight match. Per the club, that set new single-season club records for wins and points, extended its record for road wins in a season to eight, and gave the Wave a playoff berth for the fourth time in five seasons. It also split the season series after Orlando won 1-0 in San Diego in May. The club noted the Wave had gone five league matches without a win against the Pride before Friday. Next up was a trip to the North Carolina Courage on Oct. 17.
Orlando fell to 10-3-14 with 33 points, five days after winning 3-1 at Bay FC. Thomas found something to like in the comeback attempt. "Really proud of the effort, the heart, the commitment to go get ourselves back in the game," she said. The Pride's next match was at the Houston Dash on Oct. 18.
Closing Take
Yates put it best: Orlando wants to "score, take the lead and defend our house." On Friday, San Diego walked into that house, rearranged the furniture inside 22 minutes and left with a playoff ticket. In a season where fast starts have become the Wave's signature move, this one punched the ticket in October with time to spare.
