Gia Corley, Ludmila Lift San Diego Wave Past Racing Louisville and Into Second Place
Gia Corley scored and halftime substitute Ludmila added a second as the San Diego Wave beat Racing Louisville FC 2-0, handing Louisville a sixth straight loss.

Racing Louisville billed Friday night as an Oktoberfest celebration. The San Diego Wave showed up, drank the atmosphere dry and left with the three points.
Gia Corley scored in the 27th minute, halftime substitute Ludmila doubled the lead four minutes into the second half, and San Diego beat Racing Louisville FC 2-0 in front of 5,128 fans at Lynn Family Stadium. According to Racing, the result pushed the Wave past the Washington Spirit into second place. For Louisville, it was a sixth straight loss, and the club said it officially ended the team's hopes of a return trip to the playoffs.
A Goal That Wasn't, Then One That Was
Louisville actually had the first big moment. Racing says Kayla Fischer found the back of the net early, only for a narrow offside call to wipe it out after a review. Fischer was flagged offside three times in the first 12 minutes, which tells you how hard she was hunting the space behind San Diego's back line.
"Unfortunate," forward Rachel Hill said of the call. "Because if we get that go up, go ahead, it kind of changes the momentum of the game a bit."
Instead, the momentum went west. San Diego had already tested Jordyn Bloomer through Trinity Byars in the sixth minute, and in the 27th the Wave broke Louisville's press. Per the Wave, Byars flicked the ball on at midfield, rookie Lia Godfrey slipped a through ball to Corley, and Corley finished from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. It was Corley's second goal of the season.
Arin Wright headed a corner wide for Racing in the 35th minute, but the rest of the half belonged to San Diego. Bloomer saved from Melanie Barcenas just before the break and again from Byars in stoppage time.
The Turning Point: Ludmila's Instant Impact
Byars went down injured late in the first half and did not come out for the second, with Ludmila replacing her at the break. That could have been a blow for San Diego. It turned into the decisive moment of the night.
Ludmila had her first shot saved by Bloomer in the 47th minute. Two minutes later, moments after Corley had an attempt blocked, Ludmila hammered a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the top left corner. It was her third goal of the season, per the Wave, and it turned a manageable deficit into a mountain.
Louisville did not fold. Fischer forced Sandra Paños into the only save she needed to make all night in the 62nd minute, and Audrey McKeen smacked the left post in the 73rd after coming off the bench. Racing registered six of the game's final seven shots, according to the club, but Maja Lardner and Macy Blackburn both missed narrowly late on. San Diego's back line, with Mimi Van Zanten making several key plays down the stretch per the Wave, did not crack.
Star Turns
Ludmila came on at halftime and produced three shots, two on target and the goal that killed the game. That is the kind of bench production every contender dreams about.
Gia Corley scored the opener and had three shots, and Lia Godfrey provided the assist that, per the Wave, made her just the fifth rookie in NWSL history to record five assists in a season.
Kenza Dali was everywhere in the second half, putting a shot on target in the 56th minute and threading passes for Ludmila and Corley.
Jordyn Bloomer made seven saves for Louisville, and without her this is a much uglier scoreline. San Diego put nine shots on target. Bloomer stopped all but two.
Kayla Fischer was a constant nuisance up front, finishing with four shots and Racing's only effort on target, plus a yellow card in the 63rd minute.
On the other end, the Wave's captain kept her ironwoman streak alive: per the club, Kennedy Wesley has now started every match and played every minute this season.
Head coach Bev Yanez saw something worth building on. "I thought there was a lot of character out there tonight," Yanez said. "I saw a group that fought tonight."
Stats That Matter
- Shots on target: San Diego 9, Louisville 1.
- Total shots: San Diego 20, Louisville 12.
- Possession: San Diego 58.8 percent, Louisville 41.2.
- Saves: Bloomer 7, Paños 1.
- Offsides: Louisville was caught five times, three of them Fischer.
What It Means
San Diego improved to 15-3-8 with 48 points. The Wave have now won three straight, with this result following home wins over North Carolina and Kansas City, and they swept Louisville this season after a 3-2 home win in August. Paños recorded her second consecutive shutout, which the club says gave San Diego back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since the wins over Chicago on May 31 and Gotham FC on July 4. The Wave also say it was their seventh road win of 2026, a single-season club record. Barbara Bonansea, a new loan signing, made her NWSL and Wave debut off the bench in the 81st minute.
Louisville dropped to 7-2-17 with 23 points. The skid now covers six matches, including a 2-0 loss at Bay FC the previous Sunday. Midfielder Lauren Milliet was honest about where that leaves the group.
"Obviously, we always want to fight for playoffs," Milliet said. "It's disappointing in that regard. That's obviously where we want to be. I don't think that this group in general or this club is known to just like give up and lay over."
Yanez said the team had talked about "what we want from these next five games" and how it wants to be remembered "from a character standpoint, knowing that playoffs are not tangible for us this season".
San Diego visits the Orlando Pride on Oct. 2. Louisville stays home to host the Utah Royals on Oct. 3.
Closing Take
The Wave did not need a masterpiece in Louisville. They needed a clean, professional road win, and they got one, with a substitute delivering the dagger. Racing deserves credit for the fight. San Diego deserves the second-place seat.
