Trinity Byars' Two Goals and Two Assists Power San Diego Wave Past Utah Royals 4-2
Trinity Byars scored twice and set up two more as the San Diego Wave beat the Utah Royals 4-2, spoiling a brace that made Mina Tanaka the Royals' all-time leading scorer.

Every time Utah climbed back into it, Trinity Byars kicked the ladder away. Two goals, two assists, four goal contributions in one night, and a Friday at Snapdragon Stadium that turned into her personal showreel.
The San Diego Wave beat the Utah Royals 4-2 in a wild, end-to-end affair that featured six goals, two Utah equalizers and one Royals goal wiped out by VAR. Byars scored in the fourth and 63rd minutes and set up Melanie Barcenas and Ludmila for the others. Mina Tanaka answered twice for Utah and became the club's all-time leading scorer in the process, but San Diego simply had more answers.
Trading Blows Before the Break
San Diego wasted no time. In the fourth minute, Barcenas threaded a through ball behind Utah's line, Byars ran onto it and slotted a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner. Utah spent the next 25 minutes trying to find its footing, and Cece Delzer's 28th-minute shot that slid just wide was a warning. A minute later, Delzer laid the ball off to Tanaka at the edge of the box, and the Japanese midfielder whipped a first-time left-footer into the top left corner. Pure class.
The Wave regained control before halftime. In the 40th minute, Byars got loose, drew Mandy McGlynn off her line and cut the ball back across the box, where Barcenas finished first time. Lia Godfrey nearly made it 3-1 right before the break with two efforts in the 45th minute, but San Diego went into the locker room up 2-1.
Tanaka Answers, Byars Overrules
Utah came out of halftime flying. Just two minutes in, after the ball pinballed around the San Diego box, Cloé Lacasse slipped it to Tanaka, who lashed a left-footed shot high into the middle of the net. Tied again, and suddenly the momentum belonged to the visitors. Miyabi Moriya missed from the center of the box off a corner in the 52nd, and Paige Cronin had an effort blocked in the 62nd.
Then Wave coach Jonas Eidevall made a change that flipped the game. Jordan Fusco came on for Laila Harbert, who was making her first start for the club, in the 62nd minute. Barely a minute later, San Diego broke, Fusco slid a through ball into space and Byars outran the Utah defense before beating McGlynn with a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. It was Fusco's first career assist.
Seven minutes later, Byars turned provider again. Working off a throw-in on the right, she beat her defender and slid the ball into the middle for Ludmila, who finished first time into the bottom left corner to make it 4-2. Utah thought it had pulled one back in the 82nd minute when Narumi Miura found the net, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Delzer headed just wide in stoppage time, and that was the last real chance.
Byars Hits a Different Gear
Let us put Byars' night in context, because the Wave's notes department clearly had fun with it. Her two goals were her seventh and eighth of the season, the most by any San Diego player in 2026, and her two assists were the first of her career. Per the club, she moved into second place in Wave history for goals in a single season, became the second player in club history after Alex Morgan to record multiple multi-goal games, and became the second Wave player, after Morgan, to record four goal contributions in a single match.
She now has 10 goal contributions this season, making her the third player in club history to reach double digits in a season, alongside Morgan and Delphine Cascarino. Barcenas also had a career night with a goal and an assist, her first match with multiple goal contributions. The Wave said her six goal contributions are the most by any teenager in the NWSL this year.
Tanaka deserves her flowers too. Per the Royals, her brace pushed her past former Royal Amy Rodriguez for the club's all-time scoring lead with 15 goals, and she is the first Utah player with multiple two-goal games. Lacasse's assist was her ninth of the season, tying her for the league lead, and made her the third player in the league to reach 15 goal contributions this year.
The Turning Point
Fusco's introduction. Utah had just equalized and was pushing, which left space behind the back line, and Fusco exploited it almost immediately. Byars did the rest. Before that substitution, the game was tilting toward the visitors. After it, San Diego scored twice in seven minutes and the contest was over.
Stats That Matter
- Shots on goal: San Diego 5, Utah 2. The Wave scored on four of them.
- Shots: San Diego 13, Utah 12. Almost even on volume, wildly uneven on quality.
- Possession: Utah 53.9 percent, San Diego 46.1.
- Interceptions: Utah 14, San Diego 5.
- Fouls: San Diego committed 19 to Utah's 10, without a single yellow card for either side.
What It Means
San Diego improves to 11-3-7 with 36 points and pulls level with Utah, which drops to 11-3-7 and 36 points of its own. The Wave said four goals were their most in any match this season. It was also a much-needed win after a 1-0 loss at Gotham on Aug. 7 and a 1-1 home draw with Denver on Aug. 14, and San Diego has now beaten Utah twice in 2026, after a 2-1 win in Utah in March.
For the Royals, this ended a bounce-back week. They had beaten Bay FC 3-2 the previous Friday, a win the club said set a new record for wins in a season, and they arrived in San Diego three points clear of the Wave. Instead, the club noted, Utah is still searching for its first-ever points against San Diego. The Royals stay on the road for a trip to Orlando on Aug. 29, while the Wave host Racing Louisville on Aug. 28.
Closing Take
This was a heavyweight bout where both corners landed haymakers, but only one fighter had a closer. Tanaka made history and still lost, which is about as cruel as soccer gets. Byars, meanwhile, played like someone who read the script, decided it needed more of her and rewrote the third act herself. Four goal contributions, a club record chase and a statement win in a tight playoff race: that is a main-character performance.
