Sofia Huerta's Milestone Penalty and Brittany Ratcliffe's Late Strike Push Seattle Reign Past Bay FC
Sofia Huerta converted a 51st-minute penalty for her 40th NWSL goal and Brittany Ratcliffe struck in stoppage time as Seattle Reign FC beat Bay FC 2-0 at Lumen Field.

Sofia Huerta took one look at Jordan Silkowitz, picked the bottom left corner and walked away with a milestone. Forty-one minutes of game time later, Brittany Ratcliffe came off the bench and made sure nobody would remember Bay FC's late push.
Seattle Reign FC beat Bay FC 2-0 at Lumen Field on Saturday, with Huerta converting a 51st-minute penalty and Ratcliffe scoring in the second minute of stoppage time, three minutes after she entered the match. It was Seattle's third straight win and third straight clean sheet, and it completed a season sweep of Bay in front of 8,191 fans.
Forty-Five Minutes of Near Misses
The first half was busy without ever being productive. Maddie Mercado headed a set-piece delivery from Huerta just wide in the 16th minute, then dragged a right-footed shot just wide to the left in the 24th after Nérilia Mondésir slipped her in. Sally Menti forced the first save from Silkowitz a minute later, and Mondésir glanced a header narrowly wide at the end of a fast break in the 29th.
Bay had its own looks. Claire Hutton bent a shot from distance just past the right post in the 20th minute, and Cristiana Girelli had two cracks in a two-minute window, heading wide off a set piece in the 30th and blasting over from more than 35 yards in the 31st. The best chance of the half belonged to Racheal Kundananji in the 32nd minute, when Girelli nodded the ball into her path at very close range and Cassie Miller smothered the shot. Maddie Dahlien sent one just past the top left corner in the 44th, and the teams went in scoreless.
Mondésir Draws It, Huerta Buries It
The breakthrough came early in the second half and it came from Mondésir's directness. Running at Jenna Nighswonger on the right, the Reign forward got into the box and went down under the challenge, and referee Lauren Aldrich pointed to the spot in the 50th minute. Huerta, the captain, stepped up and drove a right-footed penalty low into the bottom left corner.
According to the Reign, it was Huerta's 40th NWSL regular season goal and her second of the season, and she became the 16th player in league history to reach 40. Not bad for a left back, which is where ESPN listed her in Seattle's 4-2-3-1.
Bay answered with its best spell of the night. Nighswonger tested Miller from outside the box in the 59th minute, and three minutes later Hutton let fly from distance. Miller went full stretch and got enough on it to send it off the post and out, per both clubs. Girelli dragged a left-footed effort wide moments later. That was Bay's window, and Miller slammed it shut.
The Reign's Reliable Cast
Miller finished with four saves, and Seattle says the night pushed her past 100 career saves. It was a quietly excellent shift from a keeper who was not busy often but was needed every time she was.
Mondésir was the most dangerous attacker on the field. She shared the team lead with three shots, put one on target, drew the penalty and generally made Bay's right side miserable. Mercado also fired three shots without finding the net, while Menti put both of her attempts on goal.
Then there was Ratcliffe, who entered in the 89th minute for Mondésir. In stoppage time Fishel sent her racing down the line, per the club, and Ratcliffe drove into the area before finishing left-footed from the right side of the six-yard box into the bottom right corner. Seattle's notes say it was her third goal of the season, her 13th in the NWSL and her sixth as a substitute, tied for the second-most substitute goals in league history. Some players need a warmup. Ratcliffe needs about three minutes.
For Bay, Hutton came closest to scoring and Girelli led the visitors with three shots. Silkowitz made four saves and kept the margin respectable for most of the night.
The Turning Point
Bay's frustration was summed up just after the 80th minute, when substitute Karlie Lema charged toward goal and appeared to have a path to an equalizer, only to be called for a foul, according to both clubs. The Reign said she went through the back of Jordyn Bugg. Lema was also caught offside twice after coming on in the 67th minute. Combine those moments with Hutton's shot off the post, and Bay coach Emma Coates had a fair point afterward.
"Just a little bit off the mark tonight," Coates said, per Bay FC. "Different day, Claire's chance hits the post and goes in, Karlie sneaks around the back of the defender and gets in that 1v1 situation."
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Seattle 15, Bay 11.
- Shots on goal: Seattle 6, Bay 4.
- Saves: Four apiece for Miller and Silkowitz.
- Interceptions: Seattle 18, Bay 9.
- Tackles: Seattle won 10 of 15, Bay 3 of 7.
What It Means
Seattle climbs to 11-4-8 with 37 points and has won three in a row, all at home and all without conceding: 1-0 over Houston, 1-0 over San Diego and now 2-0 over Bay. The club says it is the first time since a May 25 to July 1 stretch in 2022 that the Reign have strung together four consecutive home shutout wins. Seattle also finished the season series against Bay with two wins after a 3-2 victory in California on Aug. 1. Next up is a midweek trip to Angel City FC.
Bay falls to 6-4-13 with 22 points and has lost three straight, scoring once in that stretch. The club does not get much time to stew, with a Wednesday visit to Denver Summit FC on Sept. 16.
Closing Take
Seattle is starting to look like the friend who shows up to every group project with the slides already done: not flashy, just finished. Bay, meanwhile, keeps creating enough to win on paper and not enough on grass. As Coates put it, the message is "never too high, never too low." Right now Bay would settle for a little higher.
