Seattle Reign FC needed three minutes to build a two-goal lead at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the rest of the day to protect it. Claudia Dickey handled most of the second part.

Maddie Mercado and Jordyn Bugg scored headers in the 17th and 20th minutes, both set up by Ainsley McCammon, and the Reign beat the San Diego Wave 2-0 in front of 10,796 fans. San Diego took 22 shots and put eight on target. Dickey, back in goal for the first time since May 30, saved every one of them, a single-game career high for her according to the club. The Wave had the ball, the territory and the volume. Seattle had the goals and a goalkeeper in full lockdown mode.

Three Minutes That Decided It

The opening stretch was not one-way traffic. Melanie Barcenas and Trinity Byars both got shots away for San Diego inside the first three minutes, and Seattle's first shot on target did not arrive until the 13th, when McCammon threaded a ball to Mia Fishel and Sandra Paños, making her NWSL debut for San Diego, made the save.

Then the game tilted. In the 17th minute, McCammon took a touch inside on the left to shake her defender and clipped a cross to the right side of the box, where Mercado arrived on the run and headed it into the bottom right corner. The Reign say that made Mercado the first Reign player to score in three straight games since Jess Fishlock, and it pushed her club-leading total to five goals.

Three minutes later Seattle did it again. Sally Menti swung in a corner, McCammon got her head on it to keep it alive, and Bugg headed it over the line from the left side of the six-yard box. It was her first goal of 2026 and the fourth of her NWSL career, per the club. Both scorers are San Diego natives, which made for an awkward homecoming for the home crowd.

The club also noted that it was the third straight match in which the Reign went into halftime leading 2-0. San Diego did its best to change that before the break. Byars forced a save in the 38th minute, Barcenas tested Dickey at the near post in the 44th, and in first-half stoppage time Barcenas sent a header from point-blank range toward the top of the goal. Dickey pushed it over.

San Diego Turns Up the Volume

The second half was a siege. San Diego finished with 60.8 percent of the ball, and the Wave spent long spells camped around the Seattle box. Gia Corley, booked in the 48th minute, had a low shot saved in the 58th and another stopped from the center of the box in the 68th. Lia Godfrey came on in the 60th minute and fired three shots, the best of them a 70th-minute effort from outside the box that Dickey kept out of the top right corner. Barcenas tried again from distance in the 89th. Jordan Fusco's shot in the sixth minute of stoppage time was the last one Dickey had to deal with.

Laura Harvey answered by stacking the back. Madison Curry came on in the 72nd minute, Angharad James-Turner replaced Menti, who went off injured, in the 83rd, and Emily Mason arrived in the 88th. Seattle cleared the ball 31 times and made 24 tackles, and by the end it looked less like a soccer team and more like a set of walls.

The Difference-Makers

Claudia Dickey made eight saves for her fourth clean sheet of the season and the 17th of her NWSL regular-season career, according to the club. Several came from very close range, and none of them looked comfortable for the shooter.

Ainsley McCammon assisted on both goals. Per the Reign, she became the youngest player in NWSL history to record multiple assists in a single game, and she now has four assists this season. One assist was a cross with real quality, the other came off her head. Range.

Maddie Mercado scored for a third consecutive match before giving way to Holly Ward in the 88th minute, and Jordyn Bugg scored at one end and defended at the other.

For San Diego, Melanie Barcenas was the most dangerous player on the field, with five shots and three on target. The Wave say she also made her 50th regular-season appearance, the youngest player in club history to do so and the second youngest in the NWSL, behind Olivia Moultrie.

The Turning Point

The 20th minute. One goal against the run of a balanced start could be weathered. Two in three minutes forced San Diego to chase for the rest of the afternoon against a team that was perfectly happy to sit deep and let Dickey work.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: San Diego 22, Seattle 9. On target: San Diego 8, Seattle 5.
  • Saves: Dickey 8, Paños 3.
  • Possession: San Diego held 60.8 percent.
  • Clearances: Seattle 31, San Diego 9.
  • Corners: San Diego 7, Seattle 3.

What It Means

Seattle improves to 6-2-7 with 20 points and bounces back from a 3-2 loss at Gotham the previous weekend. The Reign have now won two of their last three, both by 2-0 scores, with a 2-0 home win over Portland in the mix. Next up is another road trip, to Bay FC on Saturday, Aug. 1.

San Diego slips to 9-2-6 with 29 points and has now lost its last two home matches by the same 2-0 score, against Angel City on July 11 and this one. The Wave are winless in three since beating Gotham on July 4. They head to Audi Field to face the Washington Spirit on Sunday, Aug. 2.

For San Diego, this one will sting precisely because the effort was there. Twenty-two shots usually buys a goal. It did not buy one against Dickey.

Closing Take

Seattle played this like a tower-defense game. Build two towers early, then spend the rest of the afternoon swatting everything that comes down the path. Dickey was the upgraded tower, and San Diego never found a way past her.
