Kevin Kelsy started Saturday on the bench, came on in the 89th minute, and left Providence Park as the hero. His header in the sixth minute of stoppage time gave the Portland Timbers a 2-1 win over LAFC and handed the previously unbeaten visitors their first loss of the season.

It was a statement for a Portland side that had not won since opening day, and a jolt for an LAFC team that had not conceded a goal all year before Kristoffer Velde beat them in the 32nd minute. The AP said that goal ended a franchise-record 571-minute shutout streak for LAFC, and MLS called it the fourth-longest single-season shutout run in league history. Kelsy then made sure the streak-breaker would not be the only headline.

A Keeper Change and a Counterattack

LAFC started brightly, with Tyler Boyd missing twice in the eighth minute and Denis Bouanga pulling a shot wide on a 13th-minute break. Then the first half took a strange turn. Play stopped in the 23rd minute for an injury to LAFC goalkeeper Thomas Hasal, and when it resumed in the 30th, Cabral Carter replaced him. The AP said Hasal was making his first start of the season and left after a collision with teammate Artem Smoliakov, and that the 21-year-old Carter was making his MLS debut.

Two minutes later, Portland struck. Cole Bassett sent Velde away from midfield, and Velde ran at the defense before firing low inside the far post from the top of the box, per the Timbers' account. ESPN logged it into the bottom left corner, and the AP described the move as a counterattack. It was Velde's team-leading third goal of the season, per the club, and the AP said it was his third goal in four games.

Carter did not have time to settle. In the 41st and 42nd minutes, he saved from David Da Costa, Brandon Bye and Bassett. LAFC had chances of its own, with Boyd forcing James Pantemis into a save in first-half stoppage time and Bouanga dragging a shot just wide three minutes later.

A Teenager's Wonder Strike

LAFC's equalizer was a thing of beauty. In the 49th minute, Matthew Evans laid the ball back from the edge of the box and Jude Terry curled a first-time, right-footed shot into the top right corner. The AP said Terry, 17, was making his first career start and scoring his first MLS goal, and that Evans, 19, was making his MLS debut. MLS called the goal a wonder strike, and nobody at Providence Park would argue.

From there, the match tilted toward LAFC. The visitors finished with 18 shots to Portland's 10 and seven corners to one. Mark Delgado forced Pantemis into a save in the 86th minute, and a minute later LAFC thought it had a winner when Ryan Porteous put the ball in the net. VAR ruled it out for offside, and the AP noted it had been a Porteous header.

The Turning Point: The Bench Answers

Portland coach Phil Neville sent Kelsy on with Ariel Lassiter in the 89th minute. Six minutes of stoppage time later, the move paid off. Velde's long delivery from the left found Bye at the far post, Bye nodded it down, and Kelsy headed in from very close range. ESPN credits Bye with the assist, while the Timbers and the AP also credited Velde.

Neville said he saw it coming. "I knew Kevin was going to score," he told reporters, per MLS, explaining that Kelsy had accepted being left out of the lineup by telling him the team mattered more. "We've got that kind of culture," Neville added.

Kelsy, who spoke in Spanish, kept it simple. "I stayed calm and worked a lot," he said, per MLS.

Star Watch

Velde was the best player on the field: the opener, a hand in the winner, two shots, one on target, and four fouls drawn. He also took a yellow card in the 82nd minute, which feels like a fair tax. "That gives us a crazy confidence boost into the next games," he said, per MLS.

Kelsy scored with his only shot. The Timbers said he was the ninth Portland player to score this season and that the goal was his first of 2026. Bye and Bassett each added an assist, and the club said Bassett's was the 25th of his MLS career.

For LAFC, Terry's goal will be replayed for years, and Carter handled an unexpected debut about as well as anyone could ask. Boyd led the visitors with four shots. The AP said Son Heung-Min and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris did not play, with MLS noting LAFC rotated its squad ahead of Tuesday's Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal second leg at Cruz Azul.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: LAFC 18, Portland 10.
  • Shots on target: Portland 8, LAFC 4.
  • Saves: LAFC 7, Pantemis 3.
  • Possession: Portland 58.1 percent, LAFC 41.9 percent.
  • Passing: Portland completed 606 of 669 passes; LAFC completed 413 of 472.

What It Means

Portland improves to 2-1-4 with 7 points. According to the AP, it was the Timbers' first win since a 3-2 home victory over Columbus in the season opener, snapping a five-game winless run. Velde summed up the mood: "It looked like we needed that one." Kelsy put it another way: "We got the three points and the team took another breath." The Timbers visit Minnesota United on April 18.

LAFC falls to 5-1-1 with 16 points. The franchise-record shutout run is gone, and so is the unbeaten start. But a rotated lineup with two debutants and a 17-year-old scorer still nearly took a point. The Champions Cup trip to Cruz Azul comes first, followed by a home date with San Jose on April 19.

Closing Take

Every streak ends eventually, but most do not end with a teenager's golazo followed by a substitute's stoppage-time header in front of the Timbers Army. This one had the pacing of a summer blockbuster: a first act with an injury twist, a second act with a hero who was not supposed to be there, and a finale nobody saw coming except, apparently, Phil Neville.
