Some wins are built on fireworks. This one was built on one header, a red card, two VAR reviews and 11 minutes of stoppage time that felt roughly as long as a Lord of the Rings extended edition.

Cloé Lacasse headed in a Paige Cronin cross in the 32nd minute, and the Utah Royals beat Angel City FC 1-0 at BMO Stadium on Saturday night in front of 15,183 fans. Angel City played the entire second half with 10 players after Maiara Niehues was sent off at the end of the first, and Utah held on for its fourth straight win and third straight shutout.

Angel City Starts Hot, Utah Strikes First

Angel City had the better of the opening half hour. Sveindís Jónsdóttir forced Mandy McGlynn into a save in the 11th minute and then smacked the left post from the left side of the six-yard box in the same minute. Jónsdóttir headed wide in the 25th minute, and McGlynn had to save from Nealy Martin a minute later.

Utah had its moments, too. Angelina Anderson saved a long-range Janni Thomsen effort in the ninth minute, and in the 27th she flew across her goal to punch away a rising Mina Tanaka shot, a save Angel City's recap singled out. Then, in the 32nd minute, Utah scored from a set piece. Cronin delivered the cross and Lacasse headed it from the center of the box into the top left corner.

The half ended in chaos. In the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time, Lacasse was booked for a foul on Gisele Thompson, according to Angel City, and Niehues was then shown a red card for violent conduct. Angel City would have to chase the game a player down.

Ten Players, Two Reviews and a Lot of Heart

Angel City head coach Alex Straus sent on Prisca Chilufya for Riley Tiernan at halftime, and the hosts came out flying. Anderson kept them in it with a save on Ana Tejada in the 49th minute, and Tejada was booked eight minutes later.

Then came the VAR portion of the evening. ESPN's data logged two VAR decisions of no penalty for Angel City, in the 65th and 71st minutes. According to Angel City, one of them came after a penalty was initially awarded when Kate Del Fava challenged Chilufya at the edge of the box, only for referee Lauren Aldrich to reverse the call after a video review. Gut punch.

Angel City kept coming. McGlynn saved an Evelyn Shores header from a tight angle in the 75th minute, then stopped Jónsdóttir at the end of a Taylor Suarez pass a minute later. Suarez sent her own chance high and wide in the 78th, and Jónsdóttir headed wide off a corner in the first minute of stoppage time. The fourth official then announced 11 added minutes, and Utah survived every one of them.

The Players Who Mattered

Lacasse scored on her only shot. Per the Royals, it gave her goals in back-to-back games, and it was Cronin's first assist of the season. McGlynn, making her first start of the 2026 season and her 50th NWSL appearance according to the club, delivered the clean sheet with a string of big stops after the break.

Tanaka and Thomsen both forced saves, and the Utah back line of Del Fava and Kaleigh Riehl held firm against wave after wave of crosses. Utah won the tackle battle 23 to 16.

For Angel City, Jónsdóttir was the most dangerous player on the field with five shots, two on target and the post. Ary Borges was named Player of the Match by the club, and Suarez made her second straight start and played her first full match as a professional, per Angel City. Straus was impressed. "Taylor did an amazing job," he said.

The Moment That Swung It

The turning point was the end of the first half. Angel City had more of the early chances, trailed only by one, and still had a full 45 minutes to chase. The red card changed the math. Even with Angel City's second-half surge, a 10-player side needed everything to go right, and the overturned penalty meant it did not.

Straus saw plenty to like anyway. "I'm really proud of the second half," he said, adding, "[The team] went for it 100 percent in the second half with one player less."

Ten Players, Plenty of Numbers

  • Shots: Angel City 11, Utah 5. Both teams put four on target.
  • Crosses: Angel City sent in 27 crosses to Utah's eight.
  • Corners: Angel City 8, Utah 3.
  • Tackles: Utah 23, Angel City 16.
  • Discipline: One red card and two yellows for Angel City, three yellows for Utah, and 33 fouls combined.

Utah Rolls On, Angel City Skids

Utah moves to 4-1-2 with 13 points. The streak started with a 2-1 win at Boston Legacy FC and has included 1-0 wins over the Chicago Stars and now Angel City plus a 3-0 rout at Seattle Reign FC. The Royals say it is the first three-game road winning streak in club history, and that Utah has now scored in 16 straight regular-season games, a club scoring record. Utah hosts the Houston Dash on Wednesday.

Angel City falls to 3-0-3 with nine points. After opening the season with three straight wins, it has now lost three in a row, and per the club this was the first time all season it was shut out. Next up is a home date with the San Diego Wave.

Lesson Learned, Hopefully

Emily Sams said the quiet part out loud. "If we come out in the first half like we did in the second half, I think we win that game," she said. "I think that's something that we can definitely learn from and take forward, that we don't have to wait until we're down a player [or] down a goal to come out with that kind of intensity." Utah, meanwhile, keeps doing the boring stuff brilliantly, and boring is winning.
