Denver Summit FC had the ball. The Utah Royals had the moments. In this league, the second thing pays a lot better.

Kiana Palacios scored her first goal for the Royals in the 20th minute, Mina Tanaka converted a 72nd-minute penalty, and Utah beat Denver Summit FC 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in front of 19,274 fans at America First Field. The Royals said the win stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches, a club record, and it also secured the Continental Divide Cup in the first meeting between the two clubs. Yazmeen Ryan's equalizer right before halftime gave Denver hope, but the Summit could not find a second.

Palacios Breaks the Seal

Utah head coach Jimmy Coenraets made one change from the previous weekend, putting Cece Delzer into the lineup in place of captain Paige Cronin. Denver, meanwhile, was the better team early, and it was not especially close. Melissa Kössler tested Mandy McGlynn from distance in the fourth minute, Natalie Means fired wide in the 12th and had another effort blocked in the 18th as the Summit piled up corners. Denver earned three of them in the first 18 minutes alone. McGlynn's early stop was the 194th regular-season save of her career, per the Royals, and she would need only one on the day.

Then Utah did what good teams do and scored on its first real look. Cloé Lacasse won the ball off a Denver defender, according to the Royals, and fed Palacios, who hit a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the top left corner. The Royals noted she became the eighth different player to score for Utah this season.

The Summit kept pushing. Denver's own match report counted 24 touches in the opposition box to Utah's 14, and right at the end of the half that pressure paid off. On a fast break, Delanie Sheehan whipped in a cross, and Ryan finished from point-blank range into the roof of the net. McGlynn had no chance.

Utah nearly answered in first-half stoppage time, but Kaleigh Riehl headed wide and Abby Smith saved Ana Tejada's shot from the center of the box.

The Turning Point: Lacasse Goes Down

Denver opened the second half with more of the same. Janine Sonis blasted over off a corner in the 55th minute, Means had another shot blocked in the 58th, and Natasha Flint fired one just wide a minute later. The Summit had everything except a finish. Utah's attack mostly lived on the counter, and it kept straying offside. Delzer was flagged in the 38th and 48th minutes, and Palacios was caught in the 65th right after Kate Del Fava had a header from a Lacasse cross blocked.

The match swung on one challenge. In the 68th minute Ayo Oke was whistled for fouling Lacasse inside the box, a call Denver's report described as controversial. Tanaka stepped up in the 72nd minute and placed her right-footed kick into the bottom right corner.

According to the Royals, Tanaka has now been involved in the winning goal in five of Utah's seven victories this season, with three goals and two assists. That is not a hot streak. That is a job description.

Coenraets immediately freshened his attack, sending on Lara Prasnikar and Alexa Spaanstra in the 73rd minute. Denver's Nick Cushing answered with Carson Pickett, then a wave of late changes including Ally Brazier and Emma Regan. Eva Gaetino was booked in the 75th minute, Tanaka pulled a shot wide from another Lacasse cross in the 80th, and Flint had to come off injured after a long stoppage. Eight minutes were added, Ryan blazed a shot over from distance in the first of them, and Utah saw it out.

Star Turns

Mina Tanaka keeps delivering when it matters. Two shots, one on target, one goal, and the Royals' most reliable source of big moments.

Kiana Palacios needed just one shot to open her Royals account, and she picked the top corner to do it.

Cloé Lacasse set up the opener and drew the penalty. Both of Utah's goals came through her.

Yazmeen Ryan scored Denver's goal and kept probing until the final whistle, finishing with two shots.

Delanie Sheehan ran Denver's midfield and delivered the assist on Ryan's equalizer, the best ball either team played all afternoon.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession without payoff: Denver held 58.7 percent of the ball and attempted 385 passes to Utah's 280.
  • Shots: The Summit outshot the Royals 9 to 6, but both teams put three on target.
  • Crossing trouble: Denver sent in 25 crosses and completed six.
  • Last line: Utah made 37 clearances to Denver's 17.
  • Corners and steals: Denver won eight corners to Utah's two and made 18 interceptions to the Royals' six.

What It Means

Utah moved to 7-2-2 with 23 points from 11 matches, and the Royals said the result left them second in the NWSL standings. Their last loss came on March 22 against San Diego, and they have won four straight at home since. Next up is a trip to Portland on May 30, Utah's final match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup break, according to the club.

Denver fell to 3-3-4 with 12 points. The loss ended a two-match winning streak built on a 4-1 rout at Houston and a 3-1 home win over Orlando, a run in which the Summit outscored opponents 7-2. On Saturday they created enough to keep that going and simply lacked the finish. The Summit visit Racing Louisville next Friday.

The Closing Take

Utah is playing soccer like a Moneyball spreadsheet. Six shots, three on target, two goals, three points. Denver did plenty of the things that look good on a highlight reel and in a possession chart, and it still flew home empty-handed. Until somebody figures out how to beat this kind of efficiency, the Royals' unbeaten run is going to keep growing.
