Ashley Sanchez walked into America First Field chasing history, and she caught it. In the 37th minute, the Courage star stepped up to a penalty, sent it into the bottom left corner, and matched the NWSL single-season scoring record with her 20th goal. On most nights, that is the headline.

This was not most nights. The Utah Royals answered with the kind of goal that wins playoff races, as Mina Tanaka threaded a through ball to Cece Delzer in the 65th minute, and Utah beat the North Carolina Courage 2-1 on Sunday evening in Sandy. Cloé Lacasse had opened the scoring with a 17th-minute header, and Mandy McGlynn made five saves to protect the lead.

Lacasse Strikes, Sanchez Answers

Both teams spent the opening quarter hour feeling each other out. Tanaka and Miyabi Moriya both fired wide from distance, Sanchez sent one just over in the fifth minute, and McGlynn saved a long-range effort from Feli Rauch in the 10th.

Then Utah found the opener. In the 17th minute, Miyabi swung in a cross from the right, and Lacasse headed it into the bottom right corner. According to the Royals, the goal pushed Lacasse's club record for goal contributions in a single season to 18, with eight goals and 10 assists.

The Courage kept pressing. Gianna Paul headed just wide from the right side of the six-yard box in the 22nd, and in the 33rd minute she drew a foul from Nuria Rábano in the box. Sanchez converted four minutes later. Per the Courage, the goal tied the league's single-season record, and only Sanchez and Temwa Chawinga, who did it for Kansas City in 2024, have reached 20 in an NWSL season. The club also noted that Sanchez is up to 24 goal contributions this season, the second most in a single NWSL campaign.

North Carolina nearly went in front before the break. McGlynn saved from Riley Jackson in the 39th minute, Ryan Williams had a shot blocked in stoppage time, and it finished 1-1 at halftime after Lacasse and Kate Del Fava were both booked.

McGlynn Holds the Line

The second half became a duel between Sanchez and McGlynn, and the goalkeeper won it. Sanchez forced a save from the center of the box in the 48th minute, then curled a shot toward the top right corner in the 59th that McGlynn had to dive to reach. The Royals' recap called it a crucial save, and it was.

That stop was the turning point. North Carolina had the momentum, more of the ball and more of the shots. One more goal there and the record-tying night becomes a record-tying win. Instead, the match flipped inside six minutes.

The Counter That Decided It

Utah's winner came on the break. Tanaka collected a headed flick near the center of the field, and the Japanese international split the North Carolina back line with a through ball that left Delzer alone against Kailen Sheridan. Delzer finished through the goalkeeper's legs, per the Royals, for her fifth goal of the season and a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute.

The rest was a test of nerves. Shinomi Koyama tried her luck from more than 35 yards, Vilde Bøe Risa sent a direct free kick just wide in the 88th minute, and Sanchez had one last chance in the third minute of stoppage time, only for McGlynn to save it low in the bottom left corner. Utah picked up four yellow cards in all, but it did not concede again.

Who Stood Out

Mandy McGlynn made five saves, three of them on Sanchez, and was the reason Utah never had to play from behind in the second half.

Ashley Sanchez took five shots, put four on target and scored the record-tying penalty. She did everything except find a way past McGlynn in open play.

Cece Delzer scored the winner, and the Royals say it was the 25th goal of her NWSL career, making her the 40th player in league history to reach that mark.

Mina Tanaka supplied the assist that decided the match, and Miyabi Moriya set up the opener.

Cloé Lacasse scored and kept adding to a club record season before coming off in the 78th minute.

On the Utah side, there was also a milestone for Madison Hammond, who made her 100th NWSL appearance according to the club. She left in the 84th minute because of an injury.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: North Carolina outshot Utah 11 to seven and put six on target to Utah's two.
  • Efficiency: Utah scored on both of its shots on target. Sheridan was not credited with a save.
  • Saves: McGlynn made five.
  • Tackles: Utah won 19 of its 25 tackles, compared with eight of 19 for North Carolina.
  • Interceptions: Utah made 16 to North Carolina's nine.

What It Means

Utah improved to 14-3-9 with 45 points, and per the club the win moved the Royals back into fourth place, in position to host a playoff game. The Royals also called it their eighth home win of the season, a new club record, and the 25th win for head coach Jimmy Coenraets. Combined with a 4-1 win in North Carolina in July, Utah swept the regular season series. A trip to Racing Louisville FC was up next on Oct. 3.

North Carolina fell to 12-3-11 with 39 points and has now lost three straight, all by a 2-1 score. With four games left, the Courage had work to do to stay in the playoff picture. Their next assignment was a visit to Seattle Reign FC on Oct. 2.

Closing Take

Sanchez got her place in the record book, and nobody can take that away. But the Royals turned her history-making night into a footnote, which is the sporting equivalent of showing up to someone else's birthday party and leaving with the cake. In a playoff race this tight, Utah will take the cake every time.
