The North Carolina Courage had not conceded a set-piece goal all season before Saturday night, according to the Utah Royals. By the final whistle in Cary, they had conceded three of them, plus a penalty.

Utah beat North Carolina 4-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park in front of 7,133 fans, scoring three times off corners and once from the spot. Kate Del Fava and Tatumn Milazzo, the Royals' two center backs, both scored in the first half, Mina Tanaka headed in a third after Evelyn Ijeh briefly gave the Courage hope, and Cloé Lacasse buried a stoppage-time penalty. The Royals say four goals is the most they have scored in a game in club history.

The Center Backs Go Shopping

It took six minutes. Utah won a corner, Nuria Rábano stepped up and lofted it toward the back post, and Del Fava rose to head it into the bottom left corner from the left side of the six-yard box. Per the Royals, it was her first goal in more than two years, her last having come in a 2-1 win over Bay FC on June 16, 2024. It was also, per the club, the first goal North Carolina had allowed from a set piece in 2026.

The Courage were not passive about it. Mandy McGlynn had to stop an Ijeh header in the 11th minute, Erica Parkinson forced another save in the 22nd, and Ally Schlegel had two decent looks, a header over the bar and a shot that McGlynn turned away in the 36th. Riley Jackson's effort a minute later met the same fate.

By then Utah had doubled the lead, again from a corner. In the 34th minute, Lacasse's delivery deflected back out to her, she worked it to Rábano at the top of the box, and Rábano's cross found Milazzo, who finished from the left side of the six-yard box. Rábano had her first multi-assist game in the NWSL, per the club, and both of Utah's center backs had scored before halftime. Del Fava added a milestone in the 42nd minute, becoming the 70th player in league history to log 10,000 regular-season minutes, according to the Royals.

A Flicker, Then Another Corner

North Carolina got back into it 10 minutes into the second half. Shinomi Koyama forced a turnover on the edge of Utah's box, and when the ball broke loose, Ijeh hammered a left-footed shot from the center of the box past McGlynn. It was her fourth goal of the season, per the Courage. North Carolina made a double change a minute later, sending on Lauryn Thompson and Natalie Jacobs.

Utah's answer was, of course, another corner. In the 65th minute, the ball came back out to Rábano after a corner, she returned it to Lacasse, and Lacasse whipped in a cross that Tanaka headed from the center of the box into the top left corner for a 3-1 lead. It was Tanaka's fifth goal of the season, according to the club, and it effectively ended the contest.

North Carolina kept pushing. Koyama skied a chance after a corner in the 75th minute, Ijeh fired over on a break in the 80th, and McGlynn got down to deny Ashley Sanchez from the left side of the six-yard box in the 83rd. In the second minute of stoppage time, Ryan Williams fouled Lacasse in the box, and Lacasse sent the penalty into the bottom left corner two minutes later. The Royals say it was the first penalty she has converted in the NWSL.

Who Ran the Show

Nuria Rábano delivered both first-half assists and was involved in Tanaka's goal too. When a left back is the most important attacking player on the field, the set-piece coach deserves a raise.

Cloé Lacasse had a goal, an assist and the foul that won the penalty. She took only one shot all night, and it was the one from 12 yards.

Mandy McGlynn made five saves, several of them before Utah had settled the game, and the Royals' defense made 16 interceptions and 26 clearances.

Kate Del Fava scored, reached an NWSL minutes milestone and wore the captain's armband, according to the lineup the Royals published. Busy night.

For North Carolina, Sanchez took five shots and Parkinson, who made the first start of her NWSL career and played the full 90 minutes per the Courage, took four. Only two of those nine attempts reached the target.

The Turning Point

Tanaka's header in the 65th minute. Ijeh's goal had turned a comfortable Utah night into a nervous one, and North Carolina was the team pressing. Ten minutes later the Royals had a two-goal cushion again, and they had built it the same way they built everything else.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots: North Carolina 22, Utah 13. On target: Utah 8, North Carolina 6.
  • Set pieces: Three of Utah's four goals followed corners, and the fourth was a penalty.
  • Saves: McGlynn 5, Kailen Sheridan 2.
  • Crosses: North Carolina attempted 31 and completed eight.
  • Interceptions: Utah 16, North Carolina 5.

What It Means

Utah moves to 9-3-4 with 30 points, and the Royals' own recap lists them third. It is a second straight win after a 1-0 home victory over Orlando on July 18, and the Royals now head home to host the Washington Spirit on Wednesday, July 29.

North Carolina falls to 6-3-6 with 21 points and has lost three in a row: 2-0 at home to Washington, 3-0 at Bay FC and now this. The Courage have scored once and conceded nine in that stretch. They stay home to host the Orlando Pride on Friday, July 31, and the first item on the agenda should be obvious: defend a corner.

Closing Take

Utah played Moneyball with dead balls. While North Carolina won the shot count and the possession battle, the Royals found the market inefficiency, a corner flag, and exploited it until the Courage ran out of answers. Some teams beat you with stars. Utah beat North Carolina with a whiteboard.
