Trinity Rodman Scores as Washington Spirit Edge Racing Louisville 1-0 for Fourth Straight Clean Sheet
Trinity Rodman's 15th-minute half-volley gave the Washington Spirit a 1-0 win over Racing Louisville FC, a third straight win and a club-record fourth straight clean sheet.

Sometimes one moment of quality is all it takes. On a rainy Wednesday night at Audi Field, Sofia Cantore slipped down the right side of the box, picked out Trinity Rodman, and Rodman's half-volley flew into the top right corner. Fifteen minutes in, the Washington Spirit had the only goal they would need.
Washington beat Racing Louisville FC 1-0 in front of 10,587 fans for a third straight win, and the back line did the rest. The Spirit say it was a club-record fourth straight clean sheet, and Louisville never really threatened to end that run, managing six shots and just one on target.
Rodman Finds the Corner
The Spirit came out hunting. Rodman forced Jordyn Bloomer into a low save in the third minute, sent a running shot over the bar in the eighth and then teed up Leicy Santos, whose effort was blocked a minute later. Rodman picked up a yellow card in the 10th minute, which did nothing to slow her down.
The goal was worth the wait. Cantore made a run down the right side of the box and sent in a cross, and Rodman met it from the centre of the box with what Louisville's own recap called an excellent half-volley. The Spirit say it was her second goal in as many matches.
Washington kept the pressure on through the middle of the half. Bloomer saved a Santos shot in the 26th minute, Rodman had another effort blocked a minute later and Lucia Di Guglielmo pulled a set piece chance wide in the 28th. Kayla Fischer was booked in the 34th minute.
Then came Louisville's best moment of the night. In the 37th minute, Quincy McMahon got on the end of a Makenna Morris ball and rattled the crossbar from the left side of the box. Louisville's own recap called it the closest Racing came to scoring.
Second Half, Same Story
Both teams changed things at halftime. Washington sent on Gabrielle Carle and Paige Metayer at the full back spots, and Louisville brought on Katie O'Kane for Sarah Weber. Metayer made an instant impact going forward, forcing Bloomer into a save in the 52nd minute after Rodman and Cantore had both fired off attempts.
Louisville's lone shot on target came in the 57th minute, when Taylor Flint headed an O'Kane cross that Sandy MacIver saved. Arin Wright headed wide from a set piece moments later. In the 63rd minute, Andi Sullivan came on for Rebeca Bernal, and the Spirit say it was her first appearance at Audi Field since September 2024, greeted with a roar from the home crowd.
The Turning Point
The match swung on a VAR review in the 65th minute. According to the Spirit, Louisville was awarded a penalty after a foul was called in the box, but the review determined Hal Hershfelt had made a legal challenge, and ESPN's feed records the final call as no penalty for Racing. A converted spot kick would have tied the match with 25 minutes to play. Instead, Washington kept its lead and its clean sheet, and Louisville never got another chance that good.
The Spirit managed the rest without much drama. Rodman pulled a shot wide in the 68th minute, Audrey McKeen had a header blocked in the 79th, and Claudia Martínez forced one more save from Bloomer deep in stoppage time after a Santos through ball.
Star Turns
Trinity Rodman was the best player on the field, scoring the winner and leading all players with six shots, two on target. When she was not shooting, she was setting up teammates.
Sofia Cantore delivered the assist, and Leicy Santos put one of her two shots on target and set up Martínez late. Hal Hershfelt made her 50th regular season appearance and, per the Spirit, completed five successful tackles. Sandy MacIver needed just one save to keep the streak alive.
For Louisville, Jordyn Bloomer made four saves to keep it a one-goal game. Taylor Flint led Racing with five tackles, according to the club, winning three of them.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Washington 13, Louisville 6. On target: Spirit 5, Racing 1.
- Possession: Washington 61.2 percent, Louisville 38.8.
- Passing: Washington completed 395 passes to Louisville's 213.
- Saves: Bloomer 4, MacIver 1.
- Shot drought: Louisville's six attempts were its lowest single-game total of the season, per the club.
What It Means
Washington moves to three wins, three draws and one loss with 12 points. After a 1-0 loss to Portland Thorns FC on opening night, the Spirit have gone six straight matches without losing and swept all three of their April matches. The defense has not conceded since a 1-1 draw with the Utah Royals on March 25. Washington now begins a long run away from Audi Field, starting at the Orlando Pride on Saturday, May 2.
Louisville falls to one win, one draw and four losses with 4 points. The club notes all four of those defeats have come on the road, during a brutal opening stretch with five away matches in the first seven. The first meeting between these teams ended 2-2 in Louisville on March 20. Racing heads to Gotham FC on Sunday before returning home to face Portland Thorns FC the following Friday.
The Final Word
Louisville's camp was honest about what went wrong. "I think we're a bit disappointed with the first half," Fischer said. "I think we beat ourselves in that half." Captain Arin Wright was blunter: "We were playing a bit timid." Head coach Bev Yanez saw an opening that went unused. "Going into the game, we really felt the line in front of the back line was something that we could potentially expose," she said. "So, felt we were just letting them off the hook a little bit." Washington, meanwhile, has turned 1-0 into an art form: score early, lock the door, and let the clean-sheet counter keep ticking. Right now, opponents are still looking for the key.
