Five minutes in, Bay FC had a lead. Seventeen minutes in, Jordan Silkowitz had the moment that kept it. Everything after that was the San Diego Wave knocking on a door that had been bolted, chained and guarded by a goalkeeper in the form of her life.

Racheal Kundananji's fifth-minute goal stood up as Bay FC beat the Wave 1-0 at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday in front of 13,508 fans. Silkowitz saved a Kenza Dali penalty in the 17th minute, finished with six saves and helped Bay to what the club called its first shutout of the 2026 season.

Five Minutes to Liftoff

San Diego nearly struck first. Ludmila got a shot away from the center of the box in the opening minute, and Silkowitz saved it. Four minutes later, Bay scored at the other end.

According to Bay FC, Claire Hutton won the ball to start the move. Taylor Huff then slid a through ball into Kundananji on a fast break, and Kundananji finished first time with her left foot from the center of the box. Bay FC says it was the fastest goal in club history, beating a seventh-minute Abby Dahlkemper goal against the Portland Thorns in 2024. It was also Kundananji's first goal of the season.

The Wave answered with urgency. Gabi Portilho headed a Perle Morroni cross wide in the 13th minute, Dudinha missed on a fast break in the same minute, and DiDi Haracic had to save a long-range Huff effort at the other end. Then, in the 15th minute, Aldana Cometti fouled Ludmila in the box. Penalty, yellow card, and a golden chance for San Diego to reset the afternoon.

The Save That Defined the Day

Dali stepped up in the 17th minute and hit a right-footed penalty toward the bottom right corner. Silkowitz got there, and per Bay FC she pushed the shot off the post and away. San Diego won a corner from the sequence and Ludmila had a header blocked, but the moment had passed.

That save changed the physics of the match. Instead of a 1-1 game with the home crowd roaring, Bay had a lead to protect and a goalkeeper who looked unbeatable. The Wave managed little else before the break beyond a Lia Godfrey header that flew high and wide from a Dali cross in the 32nd minute.

Silkowitz Builds a Wall

Silkowitz made six saves in all: Ludmila in the first minute, the penalty, two from substitute Melanie Barcenas in the 68th and 75th minutes, one from Gia Corley in the third minute of stoppage time and one more from Barcenas two minutes later. According to Bay FC, it was the third penalty save of her career, and those six saves pushed her past 100 for her NWSL career in just her second season. The club also noted it came a week after she tied the NWSL single-match saves record. ESPN's data credits her with 12 saves in that 3-0 loss at Gotham FC.

Kundananji did her damage on one shot before coming off in the 69th minute. Huff was arguably Bay's most dangerous attacker, with three shots, two on target and the assist, and she forced another good save from Haracic in the 76th minute. Hutton and Karlie Lema did the dirty work in midfield and up top, and Bay finished with 34 tackles to San Diego's 16.

For San Diego, Barcenas was a live wire off the bench with four shots, three on target. Dali bounced back from the penalty to set up several chances, including three of Barcenas' attempts. Kennedy Wesley drew five fouls at the back.

Second Half, Same Script

Bay actually came out of the locker room looking for a second. Huff headed a Sydney Collins cross wide from the right side of the six-yard box in the 46th minute, Denton had a shot blocked a minute later, and Collins fired over from a set piece in the 49th. Then the match turned into a grind, with Dudinha and Morroni booked five minutes apart.

Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall made a triple change in the 65th minute, sending on Kimmi Ascanio, Corley and Barcenas, and the Wave finally started pinning Bay back. Dudinha just missed from the center of the box in the 82nd minute. Bay countered by bringing on defenders Maddie Moreau and Kelli Hubly to close things out.

The fourth official added seven minutes, and the Wave threw everything forward. Corley and Barcenas both tested Silkowitz, and Barcenas had a final shot blocked in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Both clubs' match reports also list Eidevall as sent off late in the second half.

The game was not short on edge. Bay picked up four yellow cards, with Hutton, Cometti, Lema and Anouk Denton all booked, while Dudinha and Morroni were cautioned for San Diego.

Bay Breathes, San Diego Stalls

Bay FC moves to 3-0-3 with nine points, ending a two-game skid in which it lost 2-0 at home to the Washington Spirit and 3-0 at Gotham FC without scoring. The win closed a two-match road stretch, and Bay returns to PayPal Park to host the Utah Royals next Sunday.

San Diego falls to 5-0-3 and stays on 15 points. The Wave had won five straight after losing their opener, but they have now dropped two in a row without scoring, following a 2-0 loss at Portland. Next up is a Saturday trip to Angel City FC.

Bay's Goalkeeper Era

Every blockbuster needs a final boss, and Bay has one between the posts. Kundananji provided the spark, Huff provided the vision, and Silkowitz provided the reason none of it went to waste. Somewhere, a highlight editor is building a Silkowitz supercut and running out of timeline.
