Mercedes-Benz Stadium had been the one level of the game Chicago Fire FC could not clear. Seven league trips there without a win, per the club. On Saturday night, Atlanta United spent most of the second half handing the Fire the cheat codes.

Chicago beat Atlanta United 3-2, coming from a goal down after Tomás Jacob's fourth-minute opener. Anton Salétros equalized with a half-volley in the 30th minute, halftime substitute Anzor Mekvabishvili pounced on a goalkeeper's pass in the 51st, and Philip Zinckernagel smashed home an indirect free kick from inside the six-yard box in the 60th. Breel Embolo's header in the 67th made it a nervy finish, but the Fire held on for their first league win in Atlanta.

Fast Start, Then the Fire Took Over

Atlanta came out swinging. In the fourth minute, Miguel Almirón picked the ball up in midfield, ran at the Chicago defense all the way to the edge of the area and slipped it across to Jacob, who drilled a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner past Chris Brady. Atlanta's site called it the earliest goal of their season.

Then Chicago settled in and started leaning on the door. The Fire won five corners in the first half, Zinckernagel clipped the crossbar from the left side of the box in the 25th minute, and the equalizer arrived off the fourth of those corners. Zinckernagel's delivery was headed toward goal by Robert Lewandowski and blocked, the ball dropped outside the box, and Salétros met it with a low left-footed half-volley that skidded through traffic and into the bottom-right corner.

Atlanta had their chances to regain control before the break. Brady saved Embolo's shot from the center of the box in the 35th minute and needed treatment afterward. Paulo Díaz and Almirón both headed wide in the closing minutes of the half, and Embolo had the ball in the net late in the half, only for the goal to be wiped out because Jacob had been offside in the buildup.

Gifts Are Unwrapped

The second half turned on two Atlanta mistakes in the space of nine minutes. Maren Haile-Selassie had already blazed over from the middle of the box in the 51st minute with Atlanta's goal unguarded, a warning sign. Moments later, Lucas Hoyos played a routine pass out of the back, Mekvabishvili read it, won the ball and finished from the center of the box. It was his first MLS goal, in only his third appearance for Chicago.

The second gift was stranger. In the 57th minute, Hoyos picked up a back pass from Elías Báez, and the referee awarded Chicago an indirect free kick inside the six-yard box. After a string of restarts, Salétros tapped it to Zinckernagel, who blasted it into the top-right corner for 3-1.

Atlanta did not fold. Báez whipped in a cross in the 67th minute, and Embolo thumped a header into the bottom-left corner. Four minutes later, Embolo ran onto a long ball from Hoyos and found himself one-on-one, but his shot from the left side of the box went wide.

The last 20 minutes got chippy. Five yellow cards were shown between the 74th and 84th minutes, three of them to Chicago, and the Fire switched to survival mode, absorbing five minutes of stoppage time with a deep block.

Stars of the Night

Anton Salétros was the best player on the field. A goal, the assist on Zinckernagel's winner and two shots, one on target. According to the Fire, it was the first time he has had multiple goal contributions in a match for the club, and the assist was his second game-winning assist of 2026.

Philip Zinckernagel had a hand in almost everything. He hit the bar, created the equalizer from the corner, and scored the winner. Per the club, it was his seventh goal of the season and his team-leading fifth game-winning goal of 2026, which the club says is tied for fourth-most in a single season, alongside Andy Herron in 2006 and Nemanja Nikolić in 2017.

Anzor Mekvabishvili changed the game off the bench. On at halftime for the booked Djé D'Avilla, he scored six minutes later, and his seven recoveries in 45 minutes led all but two players on the field, per the Fire.

Miguel Almirón was Atlanta's engine. His assist on the opener was his eighth of the season, making him the club's outright assist leader, per Atlanta United.

Breel Embolo scored, had another goal ruled out, and missed the best chance of the night to level. Three shots, two on target, and plenty to think about.

The Turning Point

The 57th-minute back pass. Chicago were already ahead 2-1, but Atlanta had been the more dangerous side late in the first half and still had time to build a response. Instead, Hoyos handled Báez's pass, Chicago got a free kick from point-blank range, and Zinckernagel turned a one-goal game into a two-goal cushion. Embolo's header seven minutes later shows exactly how much that third goal mattered.

Stats That Matter

  • Shots on target: Chicago put four on target and scored three. Atlanta put three on target and scored two.
  • Saves: One apiece for Brady and Hoyos.
  • Clearances: Chicago made 32 to Atlanta's 15, a sign of how deep the Fire sat late.
  • Crosses: Atlanta attempted 22 and completed seven. Chicago completed one of 14.
  • Possession: Chicago held 52.8 percent.

What It Means

Chicago move to 15-6-10 (wins, draws, losses) with 51 points, and the club says the win kept them fourth in the Eastern Conference after back-to-back losses to Philadelphia and New England. The Fire, who had clinched a second straight postseason berth one match earlier, also locked up back-to-back 15-win seasons for the first time since 2001, per the club, along with consecutive 50-point campaigns for the first time since that same season. Gregg Berhalter's 30 wins since 2025 are the most by a Fire coach across his first two seasons since Bob Bradley, according to the club. Chicago also swept the season series after a 1-0 home win in April.

Atlanta fall to 8-6-17 with 30 points and have lost three of their last four. This was their penultimate home match of the season, and Atlanta's own report said they need points to stay alive in the playoff race.

The Closing Take

Atlanta's second half was Oprah's giveaway episode: you get a goal, and you get a goal. Chicago did not need to be brilliant to break their Atlanta curse. They just needed to be awake when the gifts arrived. Salétros and Zinckernagel were wide awake.
