Preston Judd Header Earns San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 Draw With Nashville SC and a Playoff Spot
Preston Judd's 70th-minute header cancelled out Hany Mukhtar's opener as the San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 with Nashville SC and clinched their first playoff berth since 2023.

Preston Judd was on his knees when he met it. Eduard Löwen whipped a 70th-minute free kick into the box from the right, Judd threw himself at it, and the header flew past Brian Schwake into the top-left corner. PayPal Park erupted, and whatever Supporters' Shield plans Nashville SC had for the night were put on hold.
The San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 with Nashville on Saturday night in front of 16,425, with Judd cancelling out Hany Mukhtar's 34th-minute opener. With San Diego and Portland also drawing, the point clinched the Quakes' first playoff berth since 2023, according to the club. Nashville still had something to celebrate: per their own report, the result locked up first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time in club history.
Quakes Swing, Mukhtar Strikes
San Jose came out with energy. Beau Leroux had a shot blocked in the seventh minute, Judd headed just over in the eighth and Timo Werner fired high from distance in the 15th. The best chance came in the 19th, when Jamar Ricketts fed Judd in the six-yard box and his effort came back off the left post.
Nashville barely threatened for half an hour, managing only a long-range Andy Nájar attempt over the bar. Then they showed why they sit on top of the league. In the 34th minute, Mukhtar drove a shot at Angus Gunn from the right side of the box. Gunn made the save, the ball came straight back to the Nashville captain, and he smashed the second chance in from a tight angle. One real chance, one goal.
Leroux was booked in the 39th minute and Judd in first-half stoppage time as the frustration showed. Dave Romney had a shot blocked, but San Jose went in a goal down despite outshooting the visitors seven to three in the half.
Judd Finds a Way
Elias Saad replaced Shak Mohammed at halftime for Nashville, and San Jose kept pushing. Löwen dragged a shot wide off a corner in the 51st minute, Ronaldo Vieira went over in the 55th and Leroux had two more efforts go astray. Schwake made his only save of the night in the 65th, stopping a left-footed Judd shot from the center of the box, and Jack Jasinski fired just wide a minute later. At the other end, Gunn kept out a Saad drive in the 68th.
Two minutes later came the equalizer. Judd's kneeling header from Löwen's set piece made it 1-1, and the Quakes had their reward.
Bruce Arena pulled Judd in the 76th minute, explaining afterward that the striker was exhausted after three games in a week. Nashville had the final big look. In the first minute of stoppage time, Mukhtar set up Saad in the center of the box, and Gunn stood tall to keep it out.
Stars of the Night
Preston Judd was everywhere: four shots, two on target, a goal and a post. According to the Quakes, it was his 16th goal of the season, scored in his 100th MLS appearance, and it made him only the third player in club history with 16 in a season, alongside Jeremy Ebobisse and Chris Wondolowski. "I grew up watching him, so my name next to his means the world," Judd said of Wondolowski.
Hany Mukhtar did what he has done all autumn. Per Nashville, it was his 16th MLS goal of 2026 and his 10th since the World Cup break, and scoring in five straight matches matched his career-best MLS streak, set in 2022.
Angus Gunn made three saves, including the late stop on Saad that preserved the point and, with it, the playoff spot.
Eduard Löwen delivered the assist, his sixth of the league season and third since joining San Jose, per the club.
Cristian Espinoza made a homecoming, playing 79 minutes against the club where, according to San Jose, he remains the all-time assist leader with 82.
The Turning Point
The 70th-minute free kick. San Jose had peppered Nashville for most of the night without much to show for it, and the clock was starting to work against them. One well-struck delivery and one brave header turned a likely defeat into a celebration. "Luckily, they're not celebrating the Supporters' Shield in our locker room right now, so that's nice," Judd said.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: San Jose 14, Nashville 6.
- Shots on target: Nashville 4, San Jose 2. San Jose's volume did not translate.
- Corners: San Jose won four. Nashville did not earn one.
- Saves: Gunn three, Schwake one.
- Possession: Nashville 53.1 percent.
What It Means
San Jose move to 13-9-8 (wins, draws, losses) with 48 points and, per the club, sit fourth in the West. They are unbeaten in nine league matches, a run the club traces to Arena's switch to a three-man back line on Aug. 29, and this was their third straight draw. The 48 points are also the most San Jose have earned in the PayPal Park era, breaking the mark of 47 from 2015. All five regular-season meetings between these clubs have now ended level, according to the Quakes. Arena called it "a hard-fought game against arguably the best team in the league right now," and summed up the week this way: "We've managed to keep our heads above water, at least."
Nashville move to 20-7-3 with 67 points. Their four-match winning streak ended, but they are unbeaten in six and, per the club, 12 points clear at the top of MLS with four games to play. They also finished their Western Conference slate with four wins, two draws and no losses, outscoring those opponents 15-5, per the club. The Shield would arrive a week later in Montréal.
There was a little history on the touchlines, too. Both head coaches once led the U.S. men's national team, Arena in two spells and B.J. Callaghan on an interim basis in 2023, as the Quakes pointed out.
The Closing Take
Three straight draws, nine unbeaten and a playoff ticket. San Jose's autumn has become the Seinfeld of soccer runs: a show about nothing that keeps getting renewed. Against the best team in the league, nothing was more than enough.
