Riley Jackson Penalty, Ally Schlegel Homecoming Goal Give Courage 2-0 Win at Denver Summit
Riley Jackson converted a 48th-minute penalty, Colorado native Ally Schlegel added a late goal and Kailen Sheridan made six saves as North Carolina won 2-0 at Denver.

Denver Summit FC took more shots, got more touches in the box and had 11,008 fans behind it at Centennial Stadium. The North Carolina Courage had the only two finishes that counted.
Riley Jackson scored from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half, Colorado native Ally Schlegel came off the bench to add an 81st-minute insurance goal, and the Courage beat Denver 2-0 on Wednesday night. Kailen Sheridan made six saves to protect the clean sheet, and North Carolina won the first-ever meeting between the clubs.
Denver Brings the Pressure, Sheridan Brings the Gloves
The Summit came flying out of the gate, and Natasha Flint was the tip of the spear. She tested Sheridan from distance in the fourth minute and again in the 33rd, a pair of shots that set the tone for a busy night from the Denver striker. Yazmeen Ryan forced a save from the right side of the box in the 16th, Eva Gaetino pulled a shot wide off a corner a minute later, and Yuzuki Yamamoto made Sheridan work again in the 24th.
North Carolina had its moments too. Lauryn Thompson forced Abby Smith into a save in the 10th, Erica Parkinson forced saves in the 18th and 28th minutes, and Maycee Bell's header off a Jackson cross in the 41st was another one Smith had to deal with. Evelyn Ijeh nodded a corner wide in the 20th.
The final minutes of the half belonged to Denver. Delanie Sheehan, Janine Sonis and Flint all had efforts blocked or dragged wide in a frantic stretch around the 44th minute, and Sheehan was playing on a milestone night. Denver noted that this was her 100th NWSL cap. Still, the teams went to the break at 0-0, with Parkinson booked in the 43rd for the visitors.
The Turning Point
The match turned within a minute of the restart. Ashley Sanchez found Parkinson inside the box, the 18-year-old turned sharply on Gaetino, and the defender fouled her. Penalty. Jackson stepped up in the 48th minute and placed a right-footed shot into the top left corner.
That one kick reshaped everything. Denver had spent 45 minutes building a head of steam, and suddenly the Summit had to chase a game they had arguably controlled. Per the Courage, it was Jackson's second goal of the season, with both coming from the spot, and she is now 3-for-4 on regular-season penalties in her career.
Denver Pushes, North Carolina Waits
Denver coach Nick Cushing went to his bench in the 54th minute, bringing on Ally Brazier for Yamamoto, then added Yuna McCormack and Emma Regan in the 68th. The Summit poured forward. Flint skied one in the 54th, forced Sheridan into another save a minute later and launched a difficult-angle attempt high and wide in the 59th. Her 76th-minute shot off a Sonis corner missed to the right. By the final whistle Denver had attempted 21 crosses to North Carolina's 11, but only eight of them found a teammate, and the Courage cleared 30 balls out of danger.
The Courage were content to soak it up and look for the second. Sanchez forced a sharp save from Smith in the 65th minute, and substitute Hannah Betfort tested her again from a tight angle in the 80th.
Then came the dagger. In the 81st minute, Schlegel, on since the 58th, had her first effort stopped by Smith from the center of the box. The rebound sat up and Schlegel buried it from very close range. Denver's own recap called her a Colorado native, and the Courage noted she scored in front of her hometown crowd, and homecomings rarely go better than that.
Brazier forced one last save from Sheridan in second-half stoppage time, but North Carolina saw it out.
Players Who Shaped It
Kailen Sheridan made six saves, absorbed a Denver barrage in the first half and kept her fifth clean sheet of the season, according to the Courage. She was a big reason the halftime score was 0-0.
Riley Jackson scored the winner and was involved all night, delivering the crosses that set up two Bell headers. Jackson left in the 90th minute to a well-earned rest.
Ally Schlegel made the most of her time off the bench: two shots, both on target, one goal.
Erica Parkinson won the penalty, put both of her shots on target and kept Smith busy before coming off in the 79th.
Natasha Flint was Denver's most dangerous player, with seven shots and three on target, but Sheridan had an answer every time.
Abby Smith deserved better for Denver. She made seven saves, more than anyone on the field, and was beaten only by a penalty and a point-blank rebound.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Denver 17, North Carolina 14, but North Carolina put 9 on target to Denver's 6.
- Saves: Smith 7, Sheridan 6.
- Possession: North Carolina 55.2 percent, Denver 44.8.
- Clearances: North Carolina 30, Denver 9, a sign of how much defending the Courage did.
- Box touches: Denver's recap counted 27 touches in the opposing box for the Summit to 17 for North Carolina.
What It Means
North Carolina improves to 8-3-6 with 27 points, and the Courage said the win had them seventh in the standings. It was their second straight win after a 5-0 rout of Orlando, and the club pointed out that these were its first back-to-back shutout wins since March and April 2024. That is a sharp turnaround from the three straight losses that preceded it. The Courage head to Washington for a Saturday date with the Spirit.
Denver drops to 5-5-7 with 20 points and is winless in three, following a 1-0 loss at Washington and a 1-1 home draw with Boston Legacy three days earlier. The Summit's last win came against Portland on July 18. Denver stays home to face the Utah Royals on Saturday.
Closing Take
Denver did a lot of the things coaches love to see: volume shooting, territory, box entries. North Carolina did the one thing that wins games, which is putting the ball in the net when the chance shows up. Sometimes soccer is a spreadsheet. Sometimes it's a penalty and a rebound. On Wednesday, the rebound won.
