Jonathan Bond Stonewalls Minnesota United as Houston Dynamo Grind Out 0-0 Draw
Jonathan Bond made five saves as Houston Dynamo FC and Minnesota United drew 0-0 at Shell Energy Stadium, with the Loons outshooting Houston 17-10.

Two minutes into first-half stoppage time, Anthony Markanich met the ball from point-blank range and had every reason to start celebrating. Jonathan Bond had other plans. The Houston goalkeeper got to the header, Markanich's follow-up from inside the six-yard box was blocked, and the scoreboard at Shell Energy Stadium stayed stubbornly blank.
It stayed that way all night. Houston Dynamo FC and Minnesota United played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday in front of 17,377, a result that gave neither side what it really wanted but left Houston leaning on its goalkeeper yet again. Bond made five saves, and according to the Dynamo, it was his 11th clean sheet of the season and the team's 12th. Minnesota had the better chances. Houston had the better keeper.
Minnesota Brings the Pressure
The Loons came out with real purpose. Mauricio González fired wide in the fifth minute, and in the 16th Kelvin Yeboah and Cherrion Valerius both missed from the middle of the box after a corner. Houston, meanwhile, could not stay out of the referee's book: Antônio Carlos was booked in the ninth minute, Agustín Bouzat in the 30th and Lawrence Ennali in the 34th. Minnesota's report says Houston head coach Ben Olsen was also cautioned twice and sent off before halftime.
Bond started his highlight reel in the 36th minute, stopping Jefferson Díaz from the center of the box. Four minutes later he went down to collect a Yeboah shot. Then came the chaos of stoppage time: Yeboah had a shot blocked, Bond kept out Markanich's header, Markanich's rebound was blocked, and Aziel Jackson's shot from inside the six-yard box was blocked as well. Five minutes of added time, four Minnesota looks, zero goals.
Houston Wake Up, Briefly
Minnesota kept pushing after the break. Nectarios Triantis fired high in the 47th minute. Three minutes later, according to Minnesota, Bongokuhle Hlongwane broke down the right and fed Yeboah, but the ball ran a touch too far and Bond came out to smother it. In the 54th Jackson forced Bond into a leaping save. That sequence also produced Houston's only shot on target of the night, as Guilherme raced into the box on the counter and was denied by Drake Callender.
Houston turned to the bench. Duncan McGuire came on for Lyle Foster in the 56th minute, and in the 65th he got on the end of an Ennali cross only to head it wide. Bouzat had a pair of attempts in the 68th minute, Antônio Carlos had a header blocked two minutes later, and Lucas Halter missed from a corner.
Minnesota lost Díaz to an injury in the 73rd minute, with Michael Boxall replacing him and Joaquín Pereyra coming on for Jackson. Pereyra nearly made an instant impact, but Bond stopped his left-footed shot in the 84th minute. At the other end, Halter headed wide in the 83rd and Mateusz Bogusz pulled a shot just wide from the center of the box in the 86th. That was as close as either team came.
Bond, Jonathan Bond
Jonathan Bond was the story. Five saves, four of them on shots from inside the box, and a performance that earned him a spot on the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Matchday, according to the Dynamo. Houston's 12 regular-season shutouts leave the club one shy of its record of 13, set in 2007 and 2023, per the team.
Kelvin Yeboah led Minnesota with five shots but put only one on target, which pretty much sums up the night for the Loons. Anthony Markanich fired three shots and nearly broke the deadlock on that first-half header.
Aziel Jackson was singled out in Minnesota's report as one of its best performers, and he forced one of Bond's best saves before making way.
Morris Duggan, Minnesota's captain, did the dirty work at the back. The Loons' report credited him with winning repeated one-on-one battles with Ennali and Foster, and he came through a video review for a possible penalty after a first-half tangle with Ennali.
Lucas Halter, a center back, led Houston with three shots, and Drake Callender only had to make one save for Minnesota, but it was an important one.
The Turning Point
It was the stoppage-time flurry at the end of the first half. Minnesota had four chances in the space of about two minutes, including Markanich's header from very close range, and Bond plus a crowded six-yard box kept every one of them out. Had any of those gone in, the Loons would have headed to the locker room with momentum and a lead. Instead, the game went to halftime level and stayed that way.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Minnesota outshot Houston 17-10.
- Shots on target: Minnesota 5, Houston 1.
- Saves: Bond made five. Callender made one.
- Possession: Houston held 54.6 percent of the ball.
- Discipline: Houston picked up three yellow cards. Minnesota did not receive one.
What It Means
Houston move to 13-9-9 (wins, draws, losses) with 48 points. According to the Dynamo, that put them level with San Jose for the fourth-most points in the West, but fifth on tiebreakers. Houston had already secured a playoff spot, per the club, but this was their fourth straight draw and seventh consecutive match without a win, dating back to a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Sept. 9. The two teams also drew 2-2 in Minnesota on Oct. 10, so neither found a way past the other this month.
Minnesota are 8-11-12 with 35 points. They are unbeaten in four after last weekend's 3-2 win over St. Louis CITY SC, but the club's own report acknowledged it will likely take three wins and some luck to give the Loons a shot at clinching late.
The Closing Take
No tuxedo, no gadgets, no martini. Just a goalkeeper in a bright yellow shirt saying no, over and over again. Minnesota will feel like they deserved more, and maybe they did, but this was Bond's movie and everybody else was just an extra.
